The 64-year-old man was treated at the scene in Chester-le-Street before being flown to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

Lord Heseltine, the man appointed by the government to create new job opportunities for thousands of redundant SSI steelworkers on Teesside, says he will not make any "short-term gimmicky promises" to workers as they try to find new jobs.
As chairman of the Tees Valley Inward Investment programme Lord Heseltine has been charged with creating and overseeing negotiations with potential investors to maximise investment opportunities on Teesside.

A woman has been raped in North Tyneside., external
The 20-year-old was attacked by a man as she walked along Trevor Terrace, North Shields at about 00:45 on Saturday 7 November.
Det Insp Donna Rose said: "We believe the offender had a dog with him at the time of the incident and we ask anyone who may remember seeing a man with a dog... to contact us."
A 41-year-old man has been arrested and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

A police force attempted to use anti-terror laws to access the phone records of journalists and its own staff in a bid to trace a whistle-blower, it has been claimed.
Cleveland Police allegedly tried to monitor the activity of six people after a 2012 front-page story in the Northern Echo.
This included reporters from the paper, a staff member and a solicitor, the Echo said. The force has not commented to the BBC.

Lord Heseltine says it's important to offer some hope for people who have lost jobs on Teesside.
He was appointed to head up an initiative in the North East to try to find work for people affected by recent job losses in the steel industry.
While on Teesside today, he told BBC Tees: "Job creation has been a quarterly occurrence in most parts of Teesside, so if they're going to lose their job - to be doing it at a time when jobs are being created in other industries and nearby localities is better than what I remember in Liverpool in 1981 when there were no jobs. It was utterly despairing."
Northumberland County Council has opened a book of condolence following the terrorist attacks in Paris.
It is available to sign at the reception area in County Hall, Morpeth, from today, the council says.
A book of condolence has also been opened at Newcastle's Civic Centre.

A woman is being treated for a puncture wound to her leg after being bitten by a dog, external in Newcastle.
The 57-year-old was walking on Ponteland Road in Kenton Bank Foot on 2 November at about 12:30 when she was attacked.
The dog is described as being a retriever type and was being led by an elderly man in a red mobility scooter. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 101.

French stallholders at the continental market in Newcastle say they've been touched by people sharing their sorrow at the attacks in Paris.

A woman suffered minor injuries in a hit-and-run in Middlesbrough, external, police say.
The 28-year-old was hit by a small red car on Chipchase Road at about 11:45 on Tuesday 10 November.
The male driver failed to stop at the scene and Cleveland Police would like to trace this man.

The North East came to a standstill on Monday as the region observed a minute’s silence in honour of the victims of the Paris attacks, external.
