  2. 'Tragedy for Teesside'published at 17:59

    The Redcar SSI steelworks has been in the hands of the official receiver since owner Sahaviriya Steel Industries UK was wound up on 2 October.

    The receiver has now decided to close the site's coke ovens and blast furnace after no "realistic" buyer came forward.

    MPs clashed during a Commons urgent question secured by Labour's Anna Turley.

    Sam Allardyce is the 13th man to take charge of Sunderland on a permanent or caretaker basis in the last 13 years and is under no illusions over the size of the task.

    "The fact that we have 30 games will be as important as anything else because it may take the vast majority of them to get safe on the basis that it can take such a long time to catch up."

    There's queuing traffic on the A19 northbound in Sunderland between the A1231 Wessington Way junction and Testos Roundabout because of an accident earlier on. All lanes have been re-opened. Congestion to Herrington Interchange.

    In Yarm, the A67 High Street is closed in both directions between the B1265 Worsall Road junction and the Aislaby Road junction because of Yarm Fair.

    Sam Allardyce believes Sunderland must make the Stadium of Light a tough place to come if they are to fight off fears of relegation, external.

    “First and foremost in the area that Sunderland is the fans turned out in abundance,” he said. 

    “We’re averaging over 40,000 every home game and let’s be honest we haven’t had a lot to cheer at the minute.

    “I’ve got to try and give them some more entertainment at home particularly winning more matches at home is very important for us.

    "We also need to entertain the public and I think the facilities now at this club are in a fantastic position.”

  7. Two-car crash in Washingtonpublished at 17:39

    Police are appealing for information after a collision in Washington.

    The two cars crashed at the junction with Oxclose Road and Fatfield Road, near to The Terraces, at about 19:20 yesterday.

    A 56-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. His condition is described as stable.

  8. Appeal to trace missing manpublished at 17:34

    Police are appealing for help to locate a missing Newcastle man.

    Kevin Bray, 53, from Bentinck Terrace, was last seen at his home on 4 October.

    He was reported missing to police yesterday. 

    Kevin is 5ft 8in, bald and of medium build. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded top and cream checked shirt and jeans.

  9. Middlesbrough Dales death cyclist namedpublished at 17:26

    A Middlesbrough man who died while on a bike ride in the Yorkshire Dales has been named.

    Patrick McDonough, 59, was found with serious injuries on the Buttertubs Pass as he cycled from Hawes to Muker 11:40 on 4 October.

  10. Allardyce: We must avoid 'panic and fear'published at 17:21

    New Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce says he faces "a big challenge" to ensure the club avoids "the panic and fear zone" of yet another relegation battle this season.

    The Black Cats appointed Allardyce after Dutchman Dick Advocaat quit the Stadium of Light on 4 October, with the club second-bottom of the Premier League and winless in their opening eight games

    Sunderland's new manager Sam Allardyce, speaking at his first news conference as manager, said he had reservations taking the job because of the high turnover of bosses in recent years.

    Ever since owner Ellis Short completed the takeover of the club in 2009, seven people have managed the club, including two caretaker periods.

    "It is in my blood," said Allardyce. "The challenge is something I need, part of the challenge. Waking up and coming in here, it's not work really. It is almost an addiction."

    Sam Allardyce admitted his team were in trouble and said it could take much of the remaining 30 matches to keep the club in the Premier League.

    "It is a big challenge," he said. 

    "Even at this early stage of the season it is clear we are in trouble. The fact that we have 30 games will be as important as anything else because it may take the vast majority of them to get safe on the basis that it can take such a long time to catch up."

    The Black Cats are second from bottom in the Premier League with three points from eight games.

  14. David Rathband's family take police to courtpublished at 16:33

    A court date is set for a legal dispute between the family of PC David Rathband, who was shot and blinded by killer Raoul Moat, and Northumbria Police.

    Five years ago Mr Rathband was shot twice by the gunman, who had declared war on police minutes before.

    His family claims the force should have done more to alert PC Rathband to the danger posed by Moat.

    PC Rathband survived the 2010 attack, but was blinded in both eyes. He took his own life in 2012.

    At a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, a date of 12 January was agreed between the representatives from the family and the force.

  15. Allardyce criticises Wenger and Benitezpublished at 16:19

    New Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has accused his Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger of "arrogance".

    "I enjoyed beating Arsenal more than anyone when I was in charge at Bolton. We'd really got to them and Arsene Wenger hated us," Allardyce wrote in his autobiography.

    "He takes it all very personally and has an air of arrogance. He's not one for inviting you into his office for a drink after games."

    And on former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, he said: "When we beat his Liverpool team he would complain, 'They don't play my type of football.' 

    "What was that, then? Winning football? He didn't like me and he thought he was superior."
