    It was the first time in British history that civilians were bombarded in their own homes by foreign forces.

    The Bombardment of Hartlepool by the German navy on 16 December 1914 began at 08:00.

    More than 1,000 shells from three German warships rained down on the town for 45 minutes. I'll be looking back on the day's events in Hartlepool on BBC Look North at 18:30 on BBC One.

  3. Bombardment memorial unveiledpublished at 17:43 GMT 16 December 2014

    A Hartlepool Bombardment memorial has been unveiled on the town's headland.

    Hartlepool museums manager Mark Simmons said the bombardment was significant because it led to the death of the first British soldier and first British civilian on home soil during World War One as a result of enemy action and because of coastal defences being used.

  4. School closure as car park floodspublished at 17:21 GMT 16 December 2014

    Hartlepool's Fens Primary School, external on Mowbray Road will remain closed until the new year, the council says.

    Although the buildings themselves are not affected, the school was unable to open this morning due to major overnight flooding of its car park. It is due to reopen on 5 January.

    A Middlesbrough fan who ripped up pages of the Koran has become the first woman in the region to be banned from every football ground in England and Wales.

    Julie Phillips, 51, ripped up the pages of the Islamic holy book during Middlesbrough's game away at Birmingham City last December.

    The police said Phillips, who had already received a lifetime ban from Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium, had caused or contributed to numerous other acts of disorder. The judge at Teesside Magistrates' Court told her the banning order will last for three years.

  7. Employee pays tribute to former managerpublished at 16:46 GMT 16 December 2014

    Clare Haddon from Whitley Bay has paid tribute to her former manager Tori Johnson, who was killed in the armed siege in Australia.

    Claire had been travelling and worked in the Lindt café last year, where the siege took place.

    She said: "When anyone passes away, they're always described as a friendly and lovely person, but in Tori's case that is 100% true. He was a great guy, I really enjoyed working for him so it was really sad that he was one of the victims."

  8. Hartlepool taken over by TMHpublished at 16:35 GMT 16 December 2014

    Hartlepool United have been taken over by TMH 2014 Limited after chairman Ken Hodcroft and his Increased Oil Recovery firm sold their controlling stake.

    IOR were in control of Pools from 1997, with their high point reaching the League One play-off final in 2005.

    Hartlepool are currently bottom of the Football League and without a manager. "Peter Harris of TMH has taken over as chairman with Ken Hodcroft leaving the board and Russ Green retained as chief executive," a club statement read.

    Hartlepool-born James Clark produced this oil on canvas of the bombardment just weeks after the attack in 1915.

    As part of the World War One At Home project, 80 hours of audio was discovered at Teesside Archives. It was recorded in the 1980s with people who were teenagers at the time of the Hartlepool Bombardment giving their first-hand accounts.

    Pupils from Dyke House School, in Hartlepool, listened to the audio and with the help of performance poet Kate Fox produced a poem.

    They thought about what it was like for teenagers 100 years ago who were on their way to school when the bombardment started. Listen to the poem here., external

  13. Takeover and new boss for Hartlepool?published at 14:52 GMT 16 December 2014

    Hartlepool United are in advanced takeover talks and former Rotherham boss Ronnie Moore is close to becoming manager, BBC Tees Sport has learned.

    Paul Murray was sacked after 44 days in charge following the FA Cup loss to Blyth, with Pools bottom of League Two.

    Moore, 61, has been out of work since Tranmere terminated his contract in April after he admitted breaking Football Association betting rules.

    The potential takeover is believed to involve boxing promoter Dennis Hobson.
