    Film director Stephen Daldry and actress Janine Duvitski have received honorary degrees from the University of Essex, external.

    Stephen is best known for his work on Billy Elliot and Netflix TV series The Crown, while Janine is most famous for her role in Mike Leigh's Abigail's Party, as well as ITV hit Benidorm.

    The pair both attended East 15 Acting School, external, which has bases in Loughton and Southend.

    Dr Chris Main, from East 15, said they were "a shining example" of the talent the school hones.

    Hedgehog rescue groups throughout Norfolk have been inundated with "hundreds" of baby hedgehogs deserted by their mothers in the hot weather.

    The groups are calling on people to leave water and food out for the creatures.

    Paula Pithers, founder of Hodmedod's Hedgehog Support, external which help hedgehogs in Norfolk and is named after the old Norfolk word for the animal, said: "I'm personally looking after 20 babies of various sizes, but many of the other rescue centres in Norfolk have more than 30.

    "We have such dry weather, we are finding mothers are struggling to look after their young and abandoning their litters, so people need to put out a little bowl of water and food in their gardens."

    She said if people see a hedgehog out in the open during daylight hours, it is probably in trouble and they should contact a nearby rescue centre via the internet.

    Fire crews have been tackling a wide range of field fires across Suffolk and they are blaming the dry weather for a big rise in crop blazes.

    The biggest incident today was near Hadleigh where 15 appliances were called to tackle a fire spreading across a 40 acre (16 hectare) field.

    Ian Bowell, from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, external, said: "It was the biggest single fire the crews had to deal with, but other incidents were also breaking out at the same time.

    "In the two hour period between 11:00 and 13:00 we had 30 appliances deployed to fires across the county."

    Need Some1 is the first taste of of the ravers newly-announced forthcoming seventh album, No Tourists, which is out in November.

    It's their first full LP in three years.

    In a press release, the band said: "To us, No Tourists is ultimately about escapism and the want and need to be derailed.

    "Don’t be a tourist - there is always more danger and excitement to be found if you stray from the set path.”

    The punk band protagonists of the video - which you'll need to head over to YouTube to see - certainly follows that advice, getting himself in a few hairy situations.

    A retired local newspaper editor has pledged to help buy a replacement defibrillator after a publicly-accessible device was stolen this week from its mounting in St Peter's Street in Ipswich.

    Terry Hunt, former editor of the East Anglian Daily Times, external, came forward as he had recently suffered a heart attack in public.

    He was saved by a passer-by, who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and a paramedic with a defibrillator.

    "I've been through some very dark times thinking about what might have happened if I'd been home alone or if I'd been driving my little granddaughter up the A12," he said.

    "I feel so incredibly lucky that people with those skills came along."

    Since featuring the stolen defibrillator on BBC Radio Suffolk the charity Heartbeat East Suffolk, external has received money from the public as well as an offer of help installing a new one from Folley Electrical Services in Felixstowe.

    A cash machine has been stolen from the outside of a Co-Op store in Brentwood.

    Three thieves ram-raided the store in Rayleigh Road, Hutton, at around 01:20.

    They drove a Land Rover into the front of the shop before using an angle grinder to remove the machine.

    The ATM was loaded into a 4x4, while the suspects are believed to have fled in a silver Audi A6 and a navy five-door hatchback.

    The pesky birds are in abundance after a successful breeding season in the warm weather and, like a scene from a Hitchcock film, are landing on people's heads to make a grab for lunch.

    Complaints are on the rise as temperature soar, with Great Yarmouth Borough Council employing a Harris hawk to ward off the feathered foes.

    Let's hope the bird of prey doesn't get a taste for salt and vinegar as well.

  19. M11 re-opens after hay fire on lorrypublished at 09:13 BST 20 July 2018

    The M11 northbound has re-opened this morning between junction eight (Bishop's Stortford/Stansted Airport) and junction 10 (Duxford) following emergency resurfacing work to repair the road after a lorry with 40 tonnes on hay on it, caught fire.

    The road had been closed since 17:00 yesterday.
