St Mary & St Botolph's in Whitton was broken into overnight on Saturday, 30 December, and a jewellers in Ipswich town centre reported that two men had tried to sell them silver on Tuesday.

The two men, who are aged 19 and 20, are due at magistrates in the town facing charges including receiving stolen goods. One of them has also been charged with the attempted burglary of a property in Barham in April.

Suffolk Police said none of silver had been recovered and asked people to look out for items including communion cups, a bowl, flagons, a salver, chalices and a wafer box.

From an Ipswich Town perspective, one of few positives to come out of the Blues' 4-1 defeat at Fulham on Tuesday night was the return to action of midfielder Luke Hyam.

Due to a series of serious injuries, the Suffolk born player hadn't featured for the first team since May 2016.

"I felt like an 18 year old kid again," he told us today. "It was as if I was making a second debut just because of the experience of being out for such a long period of time.

"I felt a bit stiff afterwards, but that's absolutely fine. I feel like a footballer again!"

Ipswich play Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Saturday and because of injuries elsewhere, Hyam was asked about the prospect of featuring from the start at Portman Road.

"Well I'm fit. I'm not match fit but I'm available for selection!

"I need games so if I get one on Saturday then great, but if not I'll look forward to the next Under 23s game."

Nearly 3,000 ambulance patients had to wait more than half an hour outside hospitals in the East of England between Christmas and New Year's Day, figures show.

Of those, about a third were delayed for over an hour, waiting for A&E staff to become available, and preventing paramedics from attending other emergencies.

Essex was the worst-affected county in the region with 827 ambulances having to queue outside hospitals, while there were 500 cases in Norfolk and 422 in Cambridgeshire.

The worst individual hospitals were Broomfield in Essex with 243 delayed ambulances waiting to offload patients, Kettering General with 240 over the same period and Colchester with 233.

The family of an 18-year-old man who died in a Boxing Day car crash have said they are "devastated".

Jake Paxton from Bury St Edmunds was injured in the crash which happened in Rougham at 21:30. He was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital but died of his injuries the following day.

A statement from his family said: "Jake was beautiful inside and out. He was loved so very very much by all his family and those close to him".

William Smedley, 18, of Bury St Edmunds also died in the crash. Both he and Jake were passengers in a Ford Fiesta when it was involved in the crash.

Babergh District Council will elect a new leader tonight, following the resignation of Jennie Jenkins last month.

Ms Jenkins, who faced criticism over plans to merge with Mid Suffolk council, quit on 19 December before an opposition party motion for her to be removed was due to be raised.

She had refused to guarantee referendum approval over the proposed merger.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk councils already share a chief executive and have merged staff and services over the last six years.

The ruling Conservative group on the council have nominated John Ward as their leadership candidate, but others may step up to challenge him at this this evening's vote.

A yellow severe weather warning, external for wind has been issued for the East of England for between 08:00 and 19:00 on Thursday.

A spell of strong and gusty winds is expected to move eastwards during the day.
