Ghana international Albert Adomah (pictured) has been a key player for Steve Bruce's side, with eight goals from just 11 starts in the Championship.
"I watched him on Tuesday night against Sunderland and he was probably the standout player for them. He's confident and he's scoring goals. He's quick and he can be direct," said McCarthy.
"With that in mind, he's one we'll have to watch, but they have a number of good players in their squad."

Emyr Huws has been speaking to us today for the first time since recovering from an achilles injury that has blighted his season with Ipswich Town.

In his first senior appearance since agreeing a four-year-deal in the summer, the Welsh international midfielder came off the bench in the midweek 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, providing an assist for goalscorer Martyn Waghorn.
Huws said he was now ready to start matches after a few months on the sidelines.
"I didn't know what it was, to be honest. It was the strangest injury I'd ever had or ever seen in my time in football," he said.
"It messed with my head a lot, and other people's too, but it's fine now. I know it's a cliche, but I think to come through it and still be OK only makes you stronger."
