    A group of local authorities including Staffordshire and Cheshire East Council have warned that a government plan to make all schools in England academies could fail to raise standards.

    The County Councils Network, which represents 37 largely Conservative local authorities, also says it could prove poor value for money.

  6. Customers threatened with knives in pub robberypublished at 17:19 BST 25 April 2016

    Two men have robbed a pub in Staffordshire after threatening staff and customers with knives.

    Staffordshire Police say the pair went into The Ivy House, on Stafford Road, Newtown, last night and demanded cash and one customer's car keys.

    They left in the stolen car with cash - armed officers and police dogs were sent out by the force to search the area but found no-one. 

    Officers say no one was hurt but the customers and pub staff were left shaken.

    A rare baby Sulawesi crested macaque - called "one of the world's most endangered primates" - has been born at Chester Zoo, external.

    Staff at the zoo say the species is listed as critically endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species. 

    Recent estimates suggest there are fewer than 5,000 on their native island of Sulawesi, in Indonesia, due to poaching and loss of habitat. 

    Chester Zoo says the new arrival gives them a group of 15 and the baby is "doing very well so far".

    Crewe Alexandra's manager Steve Davis says he's hoping to add experienced players to his squad this summer.

    The Alex are already planning for life in League Two following their relegation.

  12. Watch: Man criticises NHS over Parkinson's disease treatmentpublished at 16:31 BST 25 April 2016

    A man from Stone, Staffordshire, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease says he paid to be treated privately because he would have had to wait nine months for NHS treatment. 

    John Mills was first diagnosed in 2013 but chose private healthcare because of the length of time it would take for him to be treated otherwise. 

    He told BBC Radio Stoke he was fortunate to have the money to do it, because it's a "difficult" situation on the NHS. 

    In a statement, the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, external told BBC Radio Stoke they provide support in people's homes and have "recently recruited two additional specialist nurses to help us do this".

    The main pool at Crewe's new Lifestyle Centre is going to be shut for a few days, Cheshire East Council say.

    The authority says it's because of a "leak of a harmless substance" from a hydraulic mechanism.

    Significant numbers of homeless people have no right to adequate help in England even if they are sleeping rough, campaigners say.

    The group, including homelessness and housing charities and lawyers, wants councils to be forced to act sooner to stop people ending up on the streets.

    English councils only have to rehouse people faced with losing their homes who are judged to be "priority" cases.

    The government is considering changing the law.
