Yesterday an inquest jury concluded the victims had been unlawfully killed and the actions of the police had contributed to the tragedy.

  8. South Yorkshire Police Chief suspendedpublished at 16:47 BST 27 April 2016

    Jenny Cork
    BBC Sheffield news

David Crompton has been the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police for the last four years. During that time he has been at the helm of a force that has faced many questions about past controversies.

There were allegations of assault, misconduct and altering of statements at the Battle of Orgreave during the miners strike in 1984.

    David Crompton

They could not be pursued because of the passage of time. The force failed to adequately tackle serial child sex abuse in Rotherham for nearly twenty years.

And then Hillsborough - where by the admission of Mr Crompton yesterday, they got policing at the match 'catastrophically wrong'.

    Mistakes which cost 96 lives.

David Crompton was due to retire in November after a 31 year police career. It's hard to see how he will return to his desk again.

It is not affecting care. Consultants, nurses, porters, catering staff are all still in the hospitals. They haven't walked out and turned the light off on the way out. People have still been attending appointments and treatments. I back the Dr's 110%"

    Jenny Coleman
    Reporter, BBC Local Live

A man who survived the Hillsborough disaster has said the inquest conclusion of unlawful killing cannot bring him closure after 27 years.

    John Davies

John Davies was in the Sheffield stadium when police failures at the turnstiles led to a fatal crush - he suffered three broken ribs and spent two days in hospital.

Mr Davies said he thinks although the truth has been heard, they have still "not had the justice... so I think somebody should be made accountable for their actions on that day."

Home Secretary Theresa May says she is "disappointed" by remarks made by South Yorkshire Police since the Hillsborough inquest verdict was announced.

Theresa MayImage source, House of Commons

She urged the force to recognise the jury's verdict. While the force must get on with the day to day job of policing it must also look at what the verdicts show; recognise the truth and accept it, she said.

Mrs May was responding to Conservative Chris Heaton-Harris' concern about the culture of South Yorkshire Police. He said comments on the force website showed it "still hasn't learned all the lessons from that tragedy".
