    It's almost a year since two huge earthquakes destroyed villages in Nepal, killing more than 8,000 people. 

    A few months ago BBC Radio Sheffield spoke to Keith Brook, a teacher at Birkdale School in Sheffield, about his plan to take pupils on a trip out there. 

    The school has been taking groups to Kathmandu for 15 years and the disaster didn't stop that this year. In fact, it made them even more determined and they also took along medical and engineering teams.

    Police are growing increasingly concerned for the safety, external of Simon Smith who has gone missing from Balby.

    He was last seen shortly before 2pm yesterday near the Woodfield Plantation area of Balby.

    The 25-year-old is described as being white, 6ft tall, slim with short dark hair that's grey on the side.

    He's believed to be unshaven and when he was last seen was wearing a black coloured Superdry jacket, blue jeans and blue and black Nike trainers with distinctive yellow laces.

    The top stories in South Yorkshire this evening include:

    • Police are again appealing for help to find a man who was convicted of robbery in his absence after failing to turn up at Sheffield Crown Court. Thirty-year-old Shaun Chamberlain, external from Bolton on Dearne was sentenced to four years in prison last month
    • Some 372 candidates will fight for 84 seats, external on Sheffield City Council this May
    • Work is taking place this weekend to join up the Elsecar Heritage Railway line to Cortonwood. Seventy junior soldiers are mucking in to get the line, which has been closed for 30 years, up and running

    Nominations have closed for candidates in this year's local elections on 5 May, confirming there'll be 372 candidates fighting over 84 seats on Sheffield City Council. 

    Labour, the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats are contesting every seat, while UKIP have fielded 42 candidates in 25 different wards. 

    The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition has 23 candidates up for election, Yorkshire First have 1, and there's one independent standing.

  7. Sheffield Half Marathon: Who'll finish first at this year's event?published at 16:33 BST 8 April 2016

    More than 7,000 people have signed up to run the 13.1 miles through Sheffield City Centre.

    The Sheffield Half marathon has been dubbed by organisers as one of the most challenging half marathon routes in the region.

    Last year Dave Archer (pictured) won the event in 1 hr 13 mins and 30 seconds.

    The main event this Sunday starts with the first wave of runners setting off from Arundel Gate at 9:30am and the overall winner is expected to cross the finish line on Pinstone Street around 10:45am.

  8. Barnsley striker targets play-offs after Johnstone's Paint Trophy winpublished at 16:12 BST 8 April 2016

    Barnsley striker Sam Winnall has targeted winning the League One play-offs after their Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final success last Sunday.

    The Tykes came from a goal down to beat Oxford 3-2 and win the competition for the first time in the club's history.

    Paul Heckingbottom's side are seventh in League One, four points outside the play-offs but with a game in hand on all the teams above them in the table.

    "It's the motivation of knowing that we could do it all again in May," he said.

    Police in Doncaster are still trying to track down a man who failed to appear at Sheffield Crown Court six months ago in relation to blackmail and robbery offences.

    A warrant was issued for the arrest of 30-year-old Shaun Chamberlain, of Bolton-upon-Dearne, who failed to appear at court in October last year. 

    Last month, nine people were jailed at Sheffield Crown Court for a range of criminal offences in Mexborough, Doncaster.

    A judge sentenced Chamberlain in his absence to four years in prison for his role in the crimes. 

    Supt Neil Thomas said: “Chamberlain may think he can outrun police or outsmart the authorities and we acknowledge he has been outstanding for a period of time, but there are a number of active enquiries to find him and bring him to justice."

  11. Man, 23, denies manslaughter chargepublished at 15:17 BST 8 April 2016

    A man has appeared in court charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Lewis Siddall (pictured) in Doncaster.

    The 24-year-old was found dead at his home in Skellow on 14 August. A post-mortem examination concluded he died of a head injury.

    Blue Horrobin, 23, of Highfield Road, Doncaster, denied the charge during a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court.

    He was bailed and will appear for trial in January 2017.

    The election is being held to find a replacement for Harry Harpham, who died in February less than a year after being elected its MP.

  14. Blackburn Meadows water works get £78m upgradepublished at 14:23 BST 8 April 2016

    A £78m scheme to improve a waste water treatment works in South Yorkshire has been completed.

    The work at Blackburn Meadows, Sheffield, started in 2012 to reduce ammonia levels in the River Don.

    Yorkshire Water said the river's water quality was now "healthier than at any point since the Industrial Revolution".

    The revamp will also aid plans to reintroduce salmon into the city centre for the first time in more than 100 years, it said.

    The facility was built in 1884 and is now opposite Meadowhall shopping centre.

    Rotherham's New York Stadium will host an expected sell-out England Women's Euro Qualifier with Belgium tonight.

    The Lionesses have recorded two wins out of two in their Group, with an 8-0 victory over Estonia and 1-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina. 

    Eight group winners and the six best runners-up go into the final tournament along with hosts the Netherlands. The other two runners-up will contest a play-off for the final spot.

    Player Alex Scott says they're looking forward to it.

    We've been talking today about Jack Reynolds from Chesterfield who went and got himself a tattoo to mark his 104th birthday.

    He's also received a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records...

  17. Historic Rotherham council elections: Full list of candidatespublished at 13:24 BST 8 April 2016

    The list of candidates, external standing in what will be an historic first all-out council election in Rotherham is out today.

    All 63 seats will be up for grabs on Thursday 5 May after the government insisted on a fresh start for the council following the child sexual exploitation scandal.

    Previously councillors have been elected a third at a time but this time all three seats in each ward will be contested.

    The Labour party is the one putting up a full slate of candidates.

    UKIP has 41 people standing and the Tories 23.

    There are 13 people standing as Independents, while the Lib Dems have five candidates. 

    Three people will stand for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition and there will be two Yorkshire First candidates.

    Earlier we told you about a fire at a farm in Dronfield Woodhouse which destroyed a barn last night.

    South Yorkshire Fire Service have tweeted some pictures from the blaze and they've praised the crews who worked for almost four hours to bring the fire under control.

    Three 14-year-old boys, two from Dronfield and one from Sheffield, were arrested and have all now been released on police bail.

    Sheffield Archives are having an open day on Friday, 15 April from 2pm to 4pm. 

    The staff who work there have been telling us about some of their favourite exhibits.

    Records from the South Yorkshire Lunatic Asylum dating back to 1872. These include details of "supposed cause of insanity" with reasons including childbirth, religion, sun-stroke and the bizarrely vague "change of life".

    Another exhibit is the council committee note from 1848. It shows how litter and anti-social behaviour was an issue, with reports of "serious accidents" caused by "persons throwing orange peel on the footpaths and on the streets".

    Finally this Cold War artefact. It seems strange to think that, in the not too distant past, the people of Sheffield lived under a cloud of possible nuclear annihilation. This poster shows what a nuclear attack would do to South Yorkshire.
