The scientists say the warning is the first of its kind for Khumbu where ponds (pictured) on the surface of the glacier in the Himalayas have expanded and joined together to form larger bodies of water.

"At present, the glacier appears to be disintegrating, and may form a few large and potentially hazardous lakes on the glacier surface," says Ann Rowan, who led the field study team from the universities of Sheffield and Leeds.

  4. Coming up on Look North: Analysis of Doncaster Children's Services reportpublished at 17:40

    James Vincent
    Reporter BBC Look North

On Look North tonight I'll have analysis on the latest damning Ofsted report on Doncaster Children's Services and an interview with John Harris (pictured) from the Safeguarding Children Board in Doncaster.

John Harris, Safeguarding Children Board, Doncaster

Concerns about the department have been in the news for the best part of a decade.

A string of deaths of vulnerable children meant the council was put into special measures, not able to control its own department. In 2013 the government decided to make that permanent, forcing them the set up an independent trust.

Today's inspection result won't be surprising for those who've followed the story of Doncaster from its lowest point. But the trust and council both say the inspection shows they are making progress.

The noxious odour has been affecting areas around Wales, Kiveton and Harthill. Rotherham Council is trying to trace the source which appears to be over the border in Killamarsh, north east Derbyshire.

The Reverend Gary Schofield says he's really frustrated because the smell is so bad and it's lasted for such a long time.

He described the odour to BBC Radio Sheffield:

    Quote Message

It smells a bit like something that's been burnt, that's a bit off. It's not just a bad odour that's in the air under your nose, but it's an odour that actually penetrates your body and people are breathing it in and struggling with their breathing.

  19. Doncaster children's services: MP says 'long way to go'published at 13:51

    Gina Bolton
    BBC Radio Sheffield

The Labour MP for Don Valley says there's still a lot more to be done to improve children's services in Doncaster.

    Don Valley MP Caroline Flint

A new inspection report from Ofsted says that children's services are still inadequate.

An independent trust is now in charge of the service. The government took it away from the local council two years ago after a number of high profile cases of neglect.

Don Valley Mp Caroline Flint admits there is still much to do:

    Quote Message

I've met with people from the new trust. I obviously have my own case work I deal with for families that are involved. I think it is improving but there's a long way to go to restore trust in the services in Doncaster in this particular area."
