    BBC News

Ten hens, six ducks and a cockerel have been killed in a ‘senseless attack’ at an allotment in Leicestershire.

The RSPCA and police were called to Earl Shilton after a pensioner, who kept the birds as pets near his home, came across the horrifying scene when he went to feed them.

The 72-year-old said it appeared someone may have taken a cockerel to fight with the birds while others were stamped on.

“I was so shocked and still feel very emotional about it all because I can’t believe anyone would do anything so cruel and pointless," he said.

The RSPCA has appealed for information on the attack, which happened on 25 June.

  18. Frustration after work to upgrade A52 haltedpublished at 16:28 BST 6 July 2018

    East Midlands Today

Businesses around Pride Park in Derby say they've been left frustrated by what appears to be a pause in work to upgrade the A52.

In May, the council revealed the project to widen the road had doubled to £30m. In the past couple of weeks heavy machinery has been removed from the site to save on costs.

Chris Hobson, director of policy at the East Midlands Chamber, said: "Businesses are very frustrated. People are coming on and off the site during rush hour and having to add a lot of time on to their journeys.

"We need really clear communication about when work is going to start again, when it's going to be finished and when we can actually start to feel the benefits."

The city council said in a statement: "Plant and equipment has been removed from site to minimise costs."

It denied work had been stopped, adding the project was focusing on "survey and design work" which was being carried out on and off-site.
