  2. Winston Churchill's War Rooms clock sold to collectorpublished at 17:57

    A clock that was used by Winston Churchill in the Cabinet War Rooms during the war has been sold to a collector after failing to sell at auction.

    The desk clock was given to George Rance, clerk and custodian of the rooms, at the end of the war in 1945.

    It failed to reach its by guide price of £400 at auction in Chichester, West Sussex on 20 November.

    A special edition Fender guitar has been launched bearing the London Tube map.

    The Fender Stratocaster has been released to celebrate the London Transport Museum, external's "Transported by Design" programme of events, looking at the importance of design on the transport network. 

  5. Latest travel: A205 closed by Kew Bridgepublished at 17:43

    The A205 by Kew Bridge station is closed following reports of a manhole fire, and the A2210 in Lewisham is closed in both directions at the Jerrard Street junction because of a crane operation and local buses are on diversion.

    And there's no service on Thames Cable Car between Royal Docks and Greenwich Peninsula due to high winds.

  6. Thousands of London school children exposed to harmful levels of air pollution, report suggestspublished at 17:34

    Nearly 25% of all school children in London and 44% of the capital’s workforce are exposed to levels of air pollution that exceed legal and healthy limits, according to a report by think tank Policy Exchange and King’s CollegeLondon, external.

    The report highlights:

    • 328,000 school children and 3.8 million workers in London are exposed to unhealthy levels of nitrogen dioxide which is linked to asthma and respiratory infections
    • 979 out of a total of 3,161 schools in London are over the limit for NO2.
    • Children attending schools in Inner London boroughs such as Westminster, Tower Hamlets, Southwark and Camden are particularly at risk to harmful levels of NO2 pollution.

    Richard Howard, author of the report, said: “London’s air is unhealthy to breathe" and “children are particularly vulnerable to unsafe levels of air pollution".

  9. Vauxhall helicopter crash pilot 'lost situational awareness'published at 16:40

    A helicopter pilot did not deliberately breach air clearance rules but had lost situational awareness when he clipped a crane and caused a fatal crash, an inquest has heard.

    Pete Barnes, 50, died when his helicopter hit a crane at The Tower in St George Wharf, Vauxhall, south London, and plunged into Wandsworth Road on the morning of 16 January 2013. 

    Pedestrian Matthew Wood, 39, from Sutton, Surrey, was also killed as he walked to work. Twelve other people on the ground were injured.

  10. Buckingham Palace dining room closed over safety fearspublished at 16:31

    Buckingham Palace's state dining room has been closed following concerns over the safety of its ceiling.

    The Queen has been made aware of the issue at her official London residence after the problem was uncovered following a routine survey.

    A palace spokesman said: "As the result of a routine survey, an issue was found with one of the ceiling beams in the roof space of the state dining room. Following further assessment, access to the room has been suspended."

    A jury has been told that the former head of a communist collective in south London ran a "nest of jealousy and vindictive cruelty" in which women were routinely humiliated, sexually assaulted and raped. 

    Prosecutor Rosina Cottage QC, summing up at Southwark Crown Court, asked the jury whether they believed his story, that the women wanted to have sex with him because they found him irresistible. 

    Aravindan Balakrishnan, 75, denies charges including rape, indecent assault, child cruelty and false imprisonment against three victims. 

  13. Monarch cancels Sharm el-Sheikh flights until new yearpublished at 15:36

    Monarch has become the latest airline to announce it will not use Sharm el-Sheikh airport until at least the new year. 

    The Luton-based carrier has cancelled flights to and from the Egyptian destination up to 6 January amid security concerns following the terrorist bombing of a Russian airliner.

    Passengers affected by the decision are entitled to change their booking to a later date, fly to another destination or request a refund. 

    The announcement comes after British Airways confirmed its flights to and fromSharm will be suspended until at least 14 January while easyJet have cancelledservices up to 6 January.

  14. Eurostar disrupted by cable damagepublished at 15:19

    Eurostar services between London and Brussels have been disrupted, external following a suspected arson attack on signalling cables.

    There were long queues of passengers at St Pancras station after a number of trains were cancelled or delayed due to vandalism in Belgium. 

    A Eurostar spokesman said it hoped the disruption would clear before tonight but warned that it was dependent on access to the high-speed line being restored.

  15. Uber unveils London car-sharing servicepublished at 15:04

    Taxi app Uber is to launch a car-sharing service in London which it claims will help cut congestion. UberPOOL will allow up to three passengers to share a car and save money on the standard fare. 

    London will become only the second European city - after Paris - to have UberPOOL when it begins operation on Friday.
