  5. Car trader jailed for impersonating trading standards officer to retrieve carpublished at 17:30 GMT 8 February 2019

A Lincolnshire car trader has been jailed for 12 months after admitting to impersonating a trading standards officer in an attempt to recover a dangerous car.

Mark Drury, 44, took a truck to recover the Honda car from a garage near Kings Lynn just days after it was sold at the yard where he was a manager in Kirton, near Boston.

Lincoln Crown Court heard the car was in an unroadworthy condition when it was sold on 8 September 2017.

The vehicle's prop shaft and rear drive shafts had been removed by a qualified mechanic the day before.

It meant the brakes could fail and the wheels could come off.

The defects were discovered five days later during an inspection at the Whittington garage in Kings Lynn.

Drury and an associate arrived with a recovery truck claiming to be a trading standards officer, but the garage became suspicious when he tried to drive it away.

Drury, of Garfits Lane, Boston, pleaded guilty to the supply of a dangerous product, on a limited basis that he had no involvement in the sale, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Passing sentence, Judge Simon Hirst told Drury he was a "dishonest man" and described the condition of the car as potentially "catastrophic."

We will not let this kind of act violence become something that is commonplace in Gainsborough. Our officers are dedicated and tenacious and will leave no stone unturned in finding the offender. If this is backed up by the community, by people coming to us with any piece of information they have, this will help make our job easier and quicker."

  8. 11% tax increase for Lincolnshire Police approvedpublished at 15:51 GMT 8 February 2019

Members of the Lincolnshire Police Panel have approved plans for residents to pay almost £24 extra on their tax bill towards the county's force.

The group approved the increase, which will bring in an extra £5,495,000 for the force.

The county's Police and Crime Commissioner Marc Jones wants to raise his part of the council tax by 11% - that is £23.94 more for a Band D property.

However, he told councillors the rise will not bridge the funding gap for 2019/20 and warned further reductions of officer numbers will be required to balance the budget.

The force has to plug a shortfall in government funding of £6.9 million by 2022/23.

    Quote Message

We were never going to be able to balance the budget on council tax alone. What we'll be using this money for is a very specific project delivery which will ultimately lead to reductions in crime, keeping them safer and making sure police can turn up in a timely way with the right kit."

Glenn Garrod says £7bn has already been removed from the care budget nationally.

He adds that councils across the country still need to make £500m worth of savings next year.

It comes as the government delays publishing a green paper on adult care funding for the fourth time.

It's now expected to be revealed in the spring.

  16. Panel considers 11% council tax police precept hikepublished at 08:00 GMT 8 February 2019

Lincolnshire's Police and Crime Panel is expected to consider raising the force's council tax precept by 11% at a meeting later.

police officer using notebookImage source, PA

Marc Jones, the county's Police and Crime Commissioner, says the proposal will see a Band D property pay £23.96 extra for policing next year.

If approved, it will generate an extra £5.5m for the Lincolnshire force.

But there are already warnings the extra funding won't be enough to cover a government funding shortfall of £6.9m by 2023.

    Quote Message

Lincolnshire is firmly at the bottom when it comes to the amount we spend per head of population across the country. There's outstanding work being carried out but, put quite simply, we can't maintain it without the extra funding."

EDF Energy confirmed it will close the 2-gigawatt plant in September and blamed "challenging market conditions" for the decision., external

The Prospect union, which represents some workers at the site, has given it's reaction.

The union also told the BBC the closure will result in a £60m loss to the local economy.

    Quote Message

We had been led to believe the power station would be wound down by 2025. We need reassurances from the company and from the government that they will do all they can to minimise the impact of this closure. We continue to work closely with Edf and the other unions to mitigate the loss of work and we will take every steps to support our members and their families at this distressing time."
