    The universities watchdog has today confirmed it is "looking into a number of regulatory matters relating to De Montfort University".

    The Office for Students say this is after the Leicester university reported an issue to them in autumn, and stressed while they investigate there is "no presumption of wrongdoing".

    It comes shortly after the university announced its vice-chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard was stepping down after nine years.

    The university has responded by saying it welcomes the investigation and it's "happy to co-operate fully with the Office for Students" but said it would be inappropriate to comment further.

    The stepfather of a 13-year-old Nottinghamshire girl who was found hanged after going missing from home has been giving evidence at her inquest.

    Daniel Peat said a neighbour's account that he made Amber Peat stand in the garden in a crucifix position, with her arms raised, was completely fictional.

    Amber was found hanged in bushes three days after going missing from home in Mansfield in May 2015.

    The inquest has previously heard that she was sometimes reluctant to go home after school and that she appeared intimidated by her stepfather.

    He said he felt she had challenging, attention-seeking behaviour and made up false allegations about him and others.

    The inquest continues.

    A man who robbed a jewellers at knifepoint while dressed in a burkha has been jailed for four years.

    Imtiaz Patel threatened a shop worker at Haymarket in Leicester on 5 January, before escaping with a £7,000 Rolex watch.

    Soon afterwards he was spotted running down nearby Church Gate by a passing police constable and PCSO, who stopped him for acting suspiciously - not realising he had just carried out the robbery.

    The officers then heard about the crime on their radio, and arrested the 42-year-old.

    At Leicester Crown Court today, Patel, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the robbery and to possession of a bladed article.

    He was sentenced to four years for the robbery and nine months for possession of a bladed article, to run concurrently.

    Patel was also sentenced to an additional two months for breaching a community order.

    Officers called to reports of a fight near a disused pub went inside to find around 120 plants they believe to be cannabis.

    As they headed to the scene in Tudor Road, Leicester, yesterday evening, they arrested a 19-year-old and an 18-year-old they believed were leaving the scene, on suspicion of burglary.

    While they were looking around the former pub another man, 28, arrived and was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the production of cannabis.

    A pensioner is in a critical condition after she was hit by a Land Rover.

    The 78-year-old woman was in Mill Green Way, Clowne, when she was hit by the 4x4 on Friday morning.

    She was taken to hospital with a serious head injury. Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

  16. Pensioner questioned over bungalow 'cannabis farm'published at 14:51 GMT 11 February 2019

    Police say a 66-year-old man is being questioned, external after more than 20 suspected cannabis plants were discovered in a bungalow in Swadlincote.

    Officers visited the home in Hall Farm Close yesterday after a tip-off.

    The plants were found in a front bedroom. The electricity supply had also been tampered with.

    Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn marked the member for Bolsover's special day by tweeting a video, external of a recent speech he made in praise of NHS staff.

    Families with disabled children in Nottinghamshire could be asked to pay more for childcare at home.

    Nottinghamshire County Council has agreed to phase out a subsidy which helps with childcare for 46 families and was designed to improve education for the disabled and allow parents to go back to work.

    Families will have to pay an average of £4,300 a year if they want to continue receiving the care.

    The opposition Labour group says cutting the scheme is "callous and unnecessary".

    But Philip Owen, who chairs the council's children and young people's committee, says there's no justification for funding it.

    He said it was started as a trial and was found to "have no effect whatsoever", and they should have cut it sooner.
