    Work to change the layout of Welford Road is expected to take about five months., external

    The city's mayor Peter Soulsby says: “By reallocating road space in this way, we can create a safe route for the growing number of people who choose to travel by bike, and make this area much more attractive for pedestrians.

    “We want cycling to become a normal, everyday way of getting about in the city centre and providing more safe routes is absolutely vital to helping achieve that goal.”

    It's Welford Road, but not as you currently know it. 

    For the price of £1.7m the city council are going to remove the bus lane between Marlborough Street and Lancaster Walk, and create a two-way cycle lane and wider pavements in its place.

    Staying dry into the evening but the cloud will thicken up overnight and the winds will soon pick up too, becoming very gusty through the early hours of the morning.

    She says: "It's the downstairs area that is wrecked more than anything so they don't really need clothes and toys it's the kitchen stuff and the cleaning stuff.

    "That water is not clean water that's come through their doors it's dirty, grimy river water and a bit of sewage so they need to clean everything and if they've not got the cleaning materials they can't clean."

  6. Locals rally round for flood victimspublished at 17:04

    A group of people in Leicestershire have teamed up to collect donations of things like bottled water and cleaning supplies for people hit by the floods in the north of England.

    They've got drop off depots for donations in Coalville, Loughborough, Enderby, and South Wigston., external

    At the weekend, two lorries and two Luton vans will be transporting the donations either to Cumbria or York - depending where the greatest need is.

  10. Major blaze 'stretched fire resources'published at 16:09

    Fire crews in Leicester were "stretched" yesterday.

    At one point, there were 15 fire engines in Belgrave dealing with the huge blaze but at the same time there was a fire in Glen Parva and in Loughborough.

    Assistant chief fire officer Andrew Brodie says they were able to cover all the fires but it was a stretch.

  11. Tigers bring in new hooker on trialpublished at 15:45

    Leicester Tigers have brought in South African hooker Michael van Vuuren on trial for a month.

    The 24 year-old, who’s previously played with Stade Franicais, has left EP Kings after cancelling his contract there.

    Tigers boss Richard Cockerill says if the trial goes well, he could provide cover for Tom Youngs and Leo Ghiraldini while the pair are on Six Nations duty.

    Andrew Brodie has described the fire in Belgrave yesterday as "one of the largest they've dealt with" in Leicester for many years.

    An investigation into what caused it is underway.

    He said: "What we are now doing is working with the forensics team to identify the cause of the blaze, so it's a joint fire and police team in there now.

    "I think they should have some idea by the end of today or tomorrow but I expect it will take a few days until they have conclusively decided what the cause of the blaze was."

    Assistant chief fire officer, Andrew Brodie, has been speaking to our reporter Jo Hollis at the scene of the fire.

    He said the fire is mainly extinguished now but there are still a few pockets that flare up so crews will stay there today, tonight and into tomorrow.

    In national news, there's a new domestic abuse offence coming into force today.

    It makes humiliation, intimidation and coercion a crime and offenders could face up to five years in prison.

    Gemma is from Braunstone and was psychologically abused by her ex-husband.

    She says: "I think the new laws are fantastic. I just wish they'd been around seven years ago when I walked out on my marriage.

    "My ex-husband needed to realise what he'd done was wrong and it would have been easier to get a divorce had those laws been around."

  15. Explosion shattered windowspublished at 14:34

    Reporter Jo Hollis has been talking to a man who's been evacuated from his house on Marjorie Street following the fire.

    He explained that his wife saw the smoke first and she alerted him. He then told his family to get out of the house because he was worried there could be an explosion.

    They got outside and knocked on their neighbours door to alert them.

    There was then an explosion that caused all the windows to shatter.

    He's been allowed in to get medication but he says he has no idea when he'll be allowed home.

  16. Belgrave residents still waiting to go homepublished at 14:19

    About 40 people are still waiting to return to their homes following a massive factory fire in the Belgrave area of Leicester.

    Most of them spent the night with family or friends but the Neighbourhood Centre has been open and available.

  17. Fight after crash in Enderbypublished at 13:48

    One person picked up a minor injury in the collision in Enderby last night but more injuries were then caused in a fight afterwards.

    A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of violent disorder has been released on bail.
