  18. Northern Powerhouse: What on earth are portable nuclear reactors?published at 13:47 BST 29 September 2017

    Nick Wilmshurst
    BBC Yorkshire Live

You may have read this morning that, among other things, the Northern Powerhouse Partnership want the government to invest £1bn on "portable nuclear reactors".

Who knew they were a thing?

We thought we'd better find out about them - so what are they and can you charge your phone with one on the train?

    Portable nuclear reactorsImage source, Nuscale

Well, the first thing you need to know is that they're smaller than your usual nuclear energy plant, for example Heysham nuclear power station in Lancashire occupies an area of about 315,000m².

A portable nuclear reactor, is just around 23m long, small enough to fit onto the back of a lorry.

A single one would never provide enough power to light up an entire city like Leeds, but the idea is you can link a few of them together and then collectively they'd be sufficient.

The only thing is, no one's built one yet and this is what the Northern Powerhouse is saying, the north should be at the front of the race to get smaller, in a nuclear kinda way.

But unfortunately it means you can't take one in your pocket to keep your phone topped up.

    Quote Message

Personally I think SMRs are probably the future of nuclear. These things can be making a substantial contribution from the early 2030s onwards."

Dame Sue Ion, Veteran nuclear champion

If you're still a little confused, here's a little visual representation from the BBC's Environment analyst Roger Harrabin.
