    It's been revealed that a controlled explosion has taken place on Mappleton beach after a device was found. 

    Hornsea coastguard were called our early yesterday morning and put up a cordon. 

    They called in the explosive ordenance disposal team to carry out the controlled detonation. 

    It's thought the device dates back to the 80s, when the practice range at Cowden was still operational.

    Labour's Keith Hunter (pictured) will be the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner for the next four years.

    He won with a majority of 24,353 votes against Matthew Grove.

    Matthew Grove got a total of 51,757 votes while Keith Hunter got 76,128 votes

    The voting went to a second round.

    A mink-trapping programme is helping ensure East Yorkshire's Tophill Low nature reserve, external remains one of the last strongholds of Britain's native Water Voles. 

    Vole numbers in many other areas have collapsed due to predation by the non-native American Mink. 

    But Richard Hampshire, the warden at Tophill Low, says trapping them is working... and here's the evidence:

  10. Roger Millward: Hull KR retire club legend's number six shirtpublished at 16:21 BST 6 May 2016

    Hull Kingston Rovers have retired the number six shirt worn by club legend Roger Millward, who died at the age of 68 this week.

    A Great Britain and England international, the stand-off made 406 appearances for Hull KR, scoring a club record 207 tries and kicking 607 goals.

    Millward, a member of the Rugby League Hall of Fame, also won six trophies in 11 seasons as a KR coach.

    This is how things currently stand - the total votes in the four local authority areas that make up the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner's area are as follows:

    As no candidate got more than 50% of the votes the second preference votes will now be counted for Keith Hunter and Matthew Grove.

    Only then will we know who will become Humberside's next PCC.

  14. It's the end of an era in Bridlingtonpublished at 15:18 BST 6 May 2016

    An era will come to a close this weekend at Bridlington Sport Centre on Gypsey Road.

    It'll close its doors for the last time on Sunday as a council-run facility. 

    Its staff are moving to the new £25m East Riding Leisure Bridlington, external (pictured) on the old Leisure World site. 

    That will open on 23 May.

  15. Missing votes in Humberside PCC electionpublished at 15:06 BST 6 May 2016

    A bundle of votes has been lost in the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner election. 

    Election officials are 49 votes short in the East Riding.

    There are 55,231 people who have voted in the East Riding but it's been agreed in the last few minutes by officials there'll be no recount for the missing bundle. 

    It's thought the vote will now go to the second round.

    That means people's second choice votes will now be added to the first votes. 

    It's because you need over 50% of the votes to win on the first round

    A lecturer at the University of Hull has won a national teaching award for pioneering teaching methods in biological sciences.

    Dr Katharine Hubbard has won the 'Teacher of the Year' award for her subject from the Royal Society of Biology, external.

    She's been recognised for her course model in which undergraduates help to produce learning materials for students in the year below.
