Image source, Ed OldfieldA new 13-screen cinema has been approved for the former BHS store in Torquay town centre.
Cornwall-based company Merlin Cinemas has been given planning permission to convert the empty shop in Union Street into a multi-screen complex.
Torbay Council’s planning committee voted in favour after hearing it would help regenerate the area.
Conditions include improving the pedestrian link from Union Street to the car park and better CCTV and lighting in the area.
Police have asked for the measures because of regular call-outs to Temperance Street and Lower Union Lane to deal with drugs and antisocial behaviour.
Other conditions include counter-terrorism measures requested by police, such as bollards to prevent vehicles being driven into the entrance and work to prevent noise reaching nearby homes.
The company said the complex would have 10 full-time and 40 part-time staff, and it was to move from its current site in Abbey Road, which is expected to be redeveloped.
Merlin said it estimated the new cinema would bring in about 300,000 visitors a year.
The BHS store closed in the summer of 2016 and was taken over by Buyology, which closed in January this year.

Plans to transform a former Maplin store into a laser tag and arcade gaming attraction have been scrapped.
The shop on Barnstaple High Street closed last year after the firm went into administration.
Delta3Base Limited had submitted a planning application to convert the former store into a laser tag arena.
However, the plans have been scrapped as Delta3Base Limited has found a more suitable property.
The application has now been withdrawn from North Devon Council’s planning list, having been declared invalid.

The victim, aged in her 20s, had items, including a purse, stolen from her and she sustained injuries to her face and upper body.
Det Sgt Kay Deer, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said the attack was "not thought to be random and we believe the suspects may have known the victim".
She added: "Police do not have reason to believe that any other attacks are likely, but would, however, warn people to be vigilant."

Plans to build a new £11m, 120-bed Premier Inn on a council-owned car park overlooking Torquay harbour are going ahead.
Torbay Council’s planning committee unanimously gave conditional approval at a meeting on Monday after hearing the scheme had been redesigned to better fit in with listed buildings in The Terrace. Some of the buildings in Higher Terrace date back to 1811.
Members agreed with a recommendation from officers that the economic benefits outweighed any harm.
The new six-floor hotel will be built on the western end of the multi-storey car park at The Terrace, behind the Hilton Hotel going up as part of the multi-million pound redevelopment of Torwood Street.
The scheme is to be funded by council borrowing to bring in revenue for services as part of its investment strategy.
Concerns were raised at the meeting that the new hotel would damage local independent guest-houses by taking their customers. But councillors were told Torbay was short of branded hotels and the area was missing out on conferences and events as a result.
The hotel will be allocated 100 spaces at the multi-storey car park with 60 for the nearby Torwood Street retail and office development, leaving 335 for general use.

She said it was important the group was within easy walking or bus distance.
