  9. Cornwall Council purchases 'failing' care homepublished at 14:32 BST 2 August 2019

    Hayley Westcott
    BBC News Online

Cornwall Council has made the "unprecedented" decision to purchase a nursing home in St Day which was at risk of closure.

Trefula House provides nursing and residential care for up to 44 people with complex needs and dementia.

The home's owners had issued a notice to close the home with a view to sell the property - placing the residents at risk of being moved from their home to out-of-county sites.

The transfer of the home to the local authority has now taken place after a "financial viability process" by Cornwall Council.

Councillor Rob Rotchell said it was the "right decision" under the "extreme circumstances".

"Our priority, first and foremost, is the welfare and care of those vulnerable individuals who currently live there, who otherwise would have had their lives disrupted with very little notice," he said.

"They would more than likely have been taken to homes outside of Cornwall, away from their family, friends and all that is familiar to them.”

The Corserv Group will take on operational responsibility for the home.

Cornwall Council added the decision does not set a precedent for any future "failing" care homes and this is an "extraordinary case".

In the Care Quality Commission's latest report it rated the care home as inadequate. , external

People living close to a lake near Par say it's been neglected for so long that wildlife is beginning to suffer.

They're concerned that water appears to be draining away because of a broken sluice gate and a blocked channel which obstructs water from coming into the lake.

Cornwall Council, which owns the site, says it is investigating the problem and working with the Environment Agency to find a long term solution.

However, local campaigners say the council must act quickly "before it's too late".
