Lanes are being closed on A380 near Kingsteignton after a lorry crashed into the central safety barrier, highways bosses said.
About 100m of the barrier, between Eagle Farm and Ideford Dip, was damaged in the collision on Thursday.
Devon County Council said it was closing both carriageways' outside lanes "after the peak travel time" to allow for repairs to start on Friday morning.
The work was expected to continue throughout the day and commuters have been warned to expect major delays at peak times, with the closures to stay in place "until it is safe to re-open both lanes".
The council added that it was expected that work would continue on Saturday morning "but it is hoped that the lane closures will be removed by the end of Saturday".

Some 650 drivers were recorded exceeding the speed limit in Devon and Cornwall on a single day just before Christmas, police say.
Devon and Cornwall Police said, external monitoring and patrols on 19 December, part of Operation Logjam, found 121 of these were class-restricted vehicles, such as delivery vans.
Officers also said some of the speeds recorded were "literally and figuratively excessive", with one car doing 114mph and a delivery van driving at 84mph in a 60 limit.
A second campaign, Operation Liquor, between 18 and 22 December detected 615 speeding offences.
Nine people were also arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the specified drug limit and driving whilst unfit through drugs.
But officers from the No Excuse Team said they were "cautiously optimistic" over only two out of 166 alcohol breath tests they carried out were positive.

A light aircraft has crashed in a field near Honiton, police say.
Emergency services were called to a farm in Colestocks at about 13:15.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the Cessna 195 aircraft had taken off from Dunkeswell airfield but was forced to make an emergency landing due to mechanical failure.
The aircraft flipped over when its nose went into muddy ground in the field during the landing.
The pilot, a man in his 40s from Exeter, was not injured.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is being informed.

Robert Manners is facing charges under the Explosives Act after police recovered a small device from his flat in Weirfield House, Larkbeare Road, last November. The area was sealed off.
The 29-year-old appeared at Exeter Crown Court by video link from prison but was not asked to enter a plea.
The judge adjourned the case and ordered the assessment to be carried out while Mr Manners is in custody.

A memorial bench which fell into a sinkhole in Exeter, will be replaced by the city council.
The original seat had only been installed a few weeks before it fell into the hole on the river bank near St James' Weir after heavy rain in the area on the night of Tuesday 18 December.
It initially opened a 13ft (4m) long sinkhole on city riverbank, swallowing the bench.
The council said it had originally hoped to recover it, but it was now planning to order a new bench and placard.
It added that the bench "will, of course, be relocated to another safe location nearby".
The council is still working to stabilise the bank and fill the hole.
The area remains cordoned off and officials have warned the public to stay away from the area while work to make the site safe is carried out.

Read MorePeople are "frustrated" that more isn't being done to police speeding and that money from fines is not being used locally, Devon and Cornwall's police commissioner says.
Currently those who break the speed limit face three penalty points and a fine of £100.
But commissioner Alison Hernandez said she wanted fines to be raised and some of that money returned to local forces to be reinvested in local road safety measures and enforcement, rather than going to central government.
Of 2,680 people who took part in the online survey 80% were in favour of stiffer penalties for those caught speeding.
Ms Hernandez said that showed that she was not the only one who wanted to see increased fines...

More than 500 people have written protest letters against plans for parking meters near a popular beach.
The proposal from Torbay Council to put meters along a stretch of Marine Drive near Preston Beach at Paignton emerged just before Christmas.
Parking is currently free and the unitary council said the plan would make parking fairer by increasing turnover at the roadside bays.
The meters would cost from 60p for an hour up to £10 for all-day, with a charge of £3.50 overnight.
Image source, GoogleProtesters said the charges would discourage local people and holidaymakers from using the beach, push cars onto neighbouring residential roads, reduce trade and hit beach hut owners who had already seen costs rise.
As well as the protest letters, more than 1,700 people had signed an online petition opposing the meters.
Torbay Council is having to find millions of pounds of cuts and extra income to balance the books after continued funding cuts.
A consultation on the parking meters proposal ends at 17:00 on Friday.

Developers will be charged for supplying new-build properties with recycling and waste containers in east Devon.
Currently East Devon Council provides all new properties with the containers free of charge, but the cost of supplying them to between 750 and 900 new homes every year is escalating.
Council environment lead John Golding told councillors on Wednesday night that about £112,000 a year was spent supplying containers and "we have to make some savings".
He said the authority could charge for containers "like other authorities", and bring in £40,000 a year of additional income.
Image source, LDRSThe council’s recycling and waste partnership board recommended to the cabinet that developers are charged £80 for each set of recycling and waste containers, which include a grey wheeled bin, a green box, green sack, food caddy and kitchen caddy.
A communal waste collection service will see a £300 charge for every communal bin.
The proposals were unanimously agreed. The cabinet also agreed to charge householders £30 if they had to replace grey wheelie bins unless they were stolen or damaged by the council’s contractors.
All recycling containers – a green box, green sack, food caddy and kitchen caddy – will continue to be replaced free of charge.
The charges come in to force from April and will be reviewed annually.
Pemros Road in St Budeaux has been closed due to an accident. Devon and Cornwall Police is at the scene.
