New plans have been submitted to build 99 new homes on land at South Crofty in Pool.

Crofty Developments has made the outline application to Cornwall Council for a development which it said would "fulfill an important role in contributing towards the regeneration of Camborne, Pool and Redruth, particularly in terms of providing new homes and supporting economic growth in the local community".

The new homes, including two and three-storey homes and three-storey apartment blocks, are planned for a site north of Kerrier Way, which is on the former South Crofty mine site which closed in 1998.

In a design and access statement, developers said that Mayne's Shaft would be rehoused in a building with access provided to Western United Mines for maintenance and ventilation purposes.

It also stated that seven open mine shafts would be capped and a sub-station demolished.

However, the design and access statement said that there was unlikely to be any affordable housing on the site due to the site's history and significant remediation costs involved.

The outline planning application was submitted last week and there is no indication when a decision will be made.

A proposed new Parliamentary constituency stretching across north Cornwall and north Devon is "undemocratic" and "insulting" according to a local MP.

The plans from the Boundary Commission include a plan to create a "Devonwall" seat that crosses the River Tamar.

Labour MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, Luke Pollard, said: "This is nothing less than a cynical attempt at a bureaucratic power grab making it easier for the Conservatives to win an election before a single vote is cast."

The review has been carried out after Parliament said the number of constituencies across the UK should be reduced from 650 to 600 with roughly the same number of electors in each - between 71,000 and 78,500.

The plans have been previously criticised in both Devon and Cornwall, and protests held against them.

The Bude, Launceston and Bideford constituency, which has been previously nicknamed "Devonwall" constituency, is one of 17 South West sub-region constituencies planned.

The commission said it was "confident" in its new map , externaland proposals, and added the "Devonwall" area was "unavoidable" if plans to make constituencies more equal in size were to be successful.

Devon County Council is facing an £8m black hole in its budget as a result of a predicted children's services overspend.

Budget monitoring reports for the first three months of 2018/19 show that the county council is set to go over budget by £8.1m, with children's services showing a forecast overspend of £8.7m.

The council's cabinet when it meets next Wednesday is being recommended to note the overspend forecast and needs to take action to contain and reduce it by March 2019.

The report of County Treasurer Mary Davis said it was still relatively early in the financial year to project with certainty what the final year end position for Devon would be.

But it added that, like many other local authorities, Devon County Council was grappling with high levels of demand for children's services.

She added that residential placements "are proving particularly difficult to contain within the budget allocated".

A taxi driver who refused to take guide dogs in his car has lost his appeal against the council's decision to take away his taxi licence .

In May, East Devon District Council received a complaint from two visually-impaired people, who said that Syed Al Miah had refused to let them and their dogs in his vehicle.

The council's Licensing Sub-committee stripped Mr Miah of his licence, as he was "no longer considered a fit and proper person" to hold it.

Mr Miah appealed the decision, but Exeter Magistrates found in favour of the council, and ordered him to pay £5,000 in legal costs.

The council said Mr Miah "changed his story on several occasions".

A spokeswoman said: "At interview he said he was scared of the dogs, at the licensing hearing he stated that for safety reasons he believed his vehicle not to be big enough, despite it being licensed to carry five passengers, and at the appeal hearing he claimed that when arriving at the hotel he wasn't sure if he had attended the correct job."

Organisers of a revived Looe music festival have announced the first acts to play on the main stage at the three-day event later in September.

Acts so far confirmed include: The Huckleberry Finns on the first evening, Friday 21 September.

Mad Dog Mcrae, comedian Kernow King and the Falmouth Soul Sensations are also due to appear.

King Creature will take to the main stage on Saturday, with The Viewers playing on Sunday.

Organisers said that "work was continuing to secure other acts for the programme".

Mayor of Looe Armand Toms said people had been "overwhelmed with the level of support we have received from bands and artists who are keen to support the festival".

The festival was under threat after the charity staging the event went into administration last week.

The number of children arrested in Cornwall and Devon has fallen by 78% over the last seven years - one of the highest rates in England - a charity says.

The Howard League for Penal Reform said its research found that Devon and Cornwall Police made 895 arrests of children aged 17 and under in 2017, down from 4,132 in 2010.

Across England and Wales, the total number of child arrests fell by 68%, from almost 250,000 in 2010 to just over 79,000 last year. The highest drop was 85% in the West Mercia force area.

The league said the decrease, compiled from responses to Freedom of Information requests, showed the success of a campaign to keep as many girls and boys out of the criminal justice system as possible.

The charity also said that keeping children out of the system helped prevent crime.

A new cross-county parliamentary constituency across north Devon and north Cornwall has been included in the latest recommendations to change the number of MPs in the UK.

The constituency of Bideford, Bude and Launceston is among the Boundary Commission for England's proposals which have been laid in Parliament.

The proposals, which could see the number of MPs cut from 650 to 600 to even-out constituency sizes, still have to be debated and voted on by MPs.

Plans for a so-called "Devonwall" constituency - a cross-River Tamar seat - have been previously questioned in both Devon and Cornwall.

Critics said its MP would find it difficult to represent constituents equally because of geographical size and unique situations and cultures in each county.

Parliament approved the principle of reducing the number of MPs in 2011.

The commission said it was "confident" in its new map, external.

A man has minor injuries after his car was stolen as he unloaded his shopping bags.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the theft of the black Toyota, which was driven off at high speed.

Inquiries to find the vehicle are ongoing.

The theft took place at about 11:00 on 25 August in Gestridge Road, Kingsteignton.

A man has been airlifted to hospital after falling off a bridge and into an estuary.

He fell from Bowcombe Bridge, near Kingsbridge, into the shallow water and suffered a serious leg injury, at about midnight.

Firefighters from Kingsbridge and Salcombe, along with specialist rescue crews from Exmouth, set up lighting and used a 45ft ladder to rescue the man from the water.

The owner of a cottage which was hit by a lorry has said diesel was "pouring out" of the vehicle and she feared it would "explode".

It happened in Liverton Road near Newton Abbot at about 06:15 when the lorry overturned and crashed into the property - causing "substantial damage" to its porch.

The driver was taken to hospital but his injuries are unknown, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

Women in the South West have been raising concerns about proposed changes to the law on gender identity.

Members of the the group Fairplay for Women are worried about possible changes to the Gender Recognition Act, external that could mean spaces such as public toilets that were hitherto exclusively for women could be opened up to transgender people who identify as women.

Members of the group were in St Ives and Plymouth this weekend.

Dr Nicola Williams, from Fairplay for Women, said they fully understood the rights of transgender people - but wanted to avoid some legal pitfalls, and ensure that women remained safe...

Trans activists have welcomed the possibility of changes, saying they were "long overdue".

A public consultation on possible changes to the legislation will end on 19 October.

Some 190 miles of roads in Devon do not have any mobile phone signal, according to the RAC Foundation.

The foundation, which has analysed data from communication regulator Ofcom said that, nationally, there were more than 5,500 miles of roads in Britain where drivers whose vehicles broke down could not call for help.

Devon is in the top 10 local authority areas most affected, with the Scottish Highlands topping the list at 910 miles of road with no coverage.

They are among about 5,540 miles of British roads - about 2% - that do not have coverage for calls from any of the country's four mobile networks.

The foundation said that, although coverage improved a great deal and all motorways had signal, the research showed there was still work to be done.

The fifth series of Poldark, which has started filming this week for BBC One, is to be the final one, the broadcaster has announced.

The Cornwall-based drama, which has legions of loyal fans around the world, is to be based on an unwritten "lost decade" between 1800 and 1810 in Winston Graham’s saga.

Series four finished with the climax of book seven, The Angry Tide - the shocking death of Elizabeth Warleggan, played by Heida Reed in the show.

But Graham leaped forward 10 years for the start of the eighth book, The Stranger from the Sea, so TV series writer Debbie Horsfield is to fill in the gaps from this period and end the series there, she said.

The show - filming in Cornwall, Bristol and surrounding areas - is due to be broadcast in 2019.

Multimillion-pound plans for new sea defences at Long Rock, near Penzance, are due to go on display.

Cornwall Council is proposing 984ft (300m) of new rock armour, along with better seating and easier beach access.

Current "vulnerable" coastal defences consist of "a mix of natural sand dunes, masonry sea walls, cladded revetments and intermittent rock armour, in varying states of repair and condition," Cornwall Council said, external.

Details of the project that would cost nearly £4m will be on display at Marazion Town Hall between 15:00 and 17:00.

A block of flats in Plymouth damaged in an arson attack blaze is still under guard several days on from it catching fire, police say.

Two fires were started deliberately in the six-storey building in Savage Road, St Budeaux, just before 11:00 last Wednesday.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the communal central stairwell, as well as smoke damage to the 12 flats in the block, displacing about 30 residents.

Police said inquiries were "ongoing to establish the exact circumstances" surrounding the fire and have appealed to for witnesses.

Det Sgt Maggie Wood, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said officers were keen "to ensure that we have spoken to everyone who has any involvement in this incident".

The secrets of a prehistoric site near Haytor are being unearthed by more than a dozen volunteers who have joined forces with archaeologists from Dartmoor National Park.

The excavation aims to examine an isolated hut circle that dates from about 1,500 years BC.

The site dates back to the middle Bronze Age, the first sign of people living on Dartmoor.
