  6. Police say drugs will 'slip through net' at Boardmasterspublished at 17:17 BST 8 August 2018

    Hayley Westcott
    BBC News Online

A Devon and Cornwall Police officer says despite an operation to crackdown on drug dealers at Newquay's Boardmasters festival, it's "inevitable" some will "slip through the net".

It comes as event organisers launch a scheme that means anyone who does manage to smuggle drugs into the event can get them tested to see if they contain any dangerous ingredients.

Supt Ian Drummond-Smith says he broadly supports the scheme and officers will be working hard to stop drugs getting into the event in the first place - but there are no guarantees.

    Ian Drummond-Smith
    Quote Message

We've got lots of officers on the road, on the rail and numerous drug detection dogs down with us this week to try and catch drug dealers. But despite all of that, an event this size with a capacity of 50,000 people, it's inevitable some drugs will slip through the net and will get into the event."

  7. Dawlish Warren may get a big wheelpublished at 17:01 BST 8 August 2018

    Daniel Clark
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Dawlish Warren is set to become the next seaside town in Devon to get a big wheel - and it could be there for 15 years.

Plans have been submitted by amusement park owner Shaw Wallis to operate a 34m-tall observation wheel on the existing grassy area of Beach Walk.

The wheel would provide views over the Exe Estuary and would complement and further enhance the current amusement park, arcade and food unites at the Funder Park, the application says.

Local businesses and councillors had "heartedly encouraged" the proposals and believed the wheel would be a major asset to Dawlish Warren, documents with the application added.

Teignbridge District Council planners will determine the fate of the application at a later date.

    Richard Whitehouse
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Plans have been submitted to place a blue plaque on the outside of The Poly in Falmouth to commemorate the two Quaker sisters who helped found it 185 years ago.

Falmouth Civic Society has applied for listed building consent to put up the plaque to commemorate Anna Maria Fox and Caroline Fox.

Documents included with the application state that The Poly opened in 1833 as a purpose-built arts, science and history centre, and led country-wide innovation in those areas.

It said that Anna Maria "inspired the founding of the Cornwall Polytechnic Society" and Caroline was credited, "not only with giving the institution its name, but for implanting the word 'Polytechnic' for the first time in the English language'."

The civic society also said there were no other plaques or permanent markers in the town to the sisters other than a gravestone in Falmouth's Quaker cemetery.

Trading Standards staff said there had been nine complaints from residents in Redruth, Bodmin, Helston, St Austell, and St Columb over the past two weeks.

"When refused payment for the work, they started to rummage around in a workshop, attempting to take tools and other items as payment," they added.

Another case saw cold-callers replacing support jacks underneath park home properties, "preying on residents' fears about the condition of supports underneath their homes", with the work being "massively over-priced and unnecessary".

  12. New figures reveal economic impact of Boardmasterspublished at 15:23 BST 8 August 2018

    Johnny O'Shea
    BBC News Online

The Boardmasters festival generated £45m for the local economy last year, according to new research.

The music and surfing event attracted 80,000 visitors in 2017 to its two sites at Fistral beach in Newquay and Watergate Bay.

The independent study by the South West Research Company, external highlighted the amount people spent on food and drink, accommodation, shopping, entertainment and transport.

    Quote Message

It’s evident that, even if festival goers are staying on site at Watergate Bay, they also travel across the town during their stay and head out along the coastline to explore, bringing additional spend to businesses across Newquay, Watergate Bay, Mawgan Porth and beyond. What’s also critical is that lots of these visitors will return to the Newquay time and time again, highlighting the importance of this event in our annual lifestyle destination calendar."

Former Truro City assistant manager Chris Todd says his resignation from the club is not because of the chairman.

Todd and manager Lee Hodges quit on Tuesday night after just two games of the season.

They said they made the tough decision because of "football reasons" and not because of other situations the club was facing.

Their announcement comes just weeks after the White Tigers announced they were moving to Torquay to play their home games because Treyew Road has been sold to developers.

Todd said he wished Truro all the best for the future.

    Quote Message

There are no hard feeling between myself and Lee and Pete. We like Pete on a personal level and he's trying to do the right thing with the club."

Club chairman Peter Masters said he was waiting for written confirmation of the resignations and claimed he had had lots of interest in the vacant manager's job.
