The investigation into the disappearance and suspected murder of 13-year-old Genette Tate in 1978 will continue, despite the death of the prime suspect.

Robert Black died earlier this week in prison in Northern Ireland while serving 10 life sentences for the abduction and murder of three young girls.

    Det Supt Paul Burgen

Devon and Cornwall Police said they were "devastated" by Black's death, as they were just weeks away from probably charging him with Genette's murder.

However Det Supt Paul Burgen said it was "only right for the family" that the police continued their file submission to the CPS, so prosecutors could make a "formal charging decision".

  5. Black's death brings no comfort to Genette's motherpublished at 17:40

Robert Black's death is not being mourned by the mother of a teenager he is suspected of killing.

Sheila Cook's 13-year-old daughter Genette Tate, vanished from the east Devon village of Aylesbeare in 1978 while she was delivering newspapers. Her body has never been found.

Devon and Cornwall Police said Black's death in prison this week came just weeks before he was likely to be charged with Genette's murder, but her mother said it would have been "an empty charge".

"We still wouldn't have known what happened or where she is. It wouldn't have answered any of our questions or given me any comfort to just give him another life sentence added to those he was already serving."

  6. Genette's mother 'not robbed of justice'published at 17:29

Devon and Cornwall Police say Black's death in prison this week came just weeks before they believe he would have been charged with Genette's murder.

"An evil man has died and I'm not sorry about that. I reflect on what an utter waste of life that he's lived and the misery he has caused to so many families," Sheila Cook said in a statement.
