  5. Taxi driver refuses to pick up blind man and his guide dogpublished at 17:59 GMT 7 February 2019

    David Pittam
    BBC News Online

A taxi driver has lost his licence for leaving a blind man standing at the side of the road because he refused to take his guide dog.

Mark Whittle, 57, wanted to be picked up near Trent Bridge, in Nottingham, in June after eating a meal with his wife who is also visually impaired.

He booked a taxi but when the driver Mohammed Saghir, 59, of Sneinton Boulevard, arrived and saw Mr Whittle with his guide dog Archer, he drove off.

A woman at the taxi rank told him the driver had not wanted the dog in the car and sent another taxi to pick him up.

Mr Whittle said: "I was really angry about what happened. Despite [the cab firm] saying to him that he had to take us, he was adamant he wouldn’t have the dog in his car.

"I’m sorry that he’s lost his licence because that’s his livelihood, but he’s only got himself to blame."

After an investigation Nottingham City Council revoked his licence.

Saghir pleaded guilty for failing to pick up a customer at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court in December last year. He was fined £210 with a £30 victim surcharge and £236.17 costs.

  19. More than 500 council staff 'turned to payday lenders'published at 14:57 GMT 7 February 2019

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

Nottingham City Council is trying to reduce the number of its workers borrowing from payday lenders after a recent report found more than 500 of its employees were turning to the companies.

    MoneyImage source, Getty Images

Payday loans are known for charging comparatively high interest rates.

Labour councillor Brian Parbutt said: "As a council, we employ a lot of people, some of whom are on relatively low earnings.

"There's a lot of people who would genuinely benefit from being a member of a credit union, and using it to buy a new washing machine or boiler rather than going to a payday lender so it's important for us that we do what we can to promote it and get good growth in the city."

The council HR report said: "A lack of financial wellbeing continues to have a negative impact at personal, organisational and national level."

The authority is encouraging its staff to instead use credit unions - community-based, not-for-profit organisations, whose members pool their savings to lend to one another.
