Stall holders at Melton's cattle market have told the BBC they're not happy with changes being made to the way it is run.

One trader said new rules and fees are making life difficult for them while another said it was a fraction of the size it once was.

The cattle market hosts a regular farmers' market and antiques fair as well as its usual livestock sales.

A former trader said he gave up running a stall there out of "despair" over the changes.

He said: "If this closes... the town of Melton might as well close because some of the shop keepers in the town do 60% of their weekly takings on a Tuesday."

Gillstream Markets Limited oversees the operational management of the market. Hugh Brown said the trading rules had not changed for about 10 years. He said some stall holders had outdated agreements and the changes make it more fair for everyone.

He admitted "change is always difficult for some" but said it is necessary for the long-term future of the market.

  17. RSPB confirms sighting of rare white sparrow in Nottspublished at 14:44 GMT 16 January 2019

    Gavin Bevis
    BBC News

We asked the RSPB about the sighting of a rare white sparrow in a garden in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

A spokesperson for the bird charity said: "This is a great photo of a leucistic sparrow and although they turn up from time to time – it’s rare to see one almost completely white.

"In affected birds, the feathers are lacking in pigmentation which can result in patches of lighter colouring.

"The eyes of birds with leucism stay dark, and are not red/pink as would be a bird with albinism.

"The condition is hereditary although the amount of pale colouration and location on the bird can vary between offspring and parent. It can even skip generations.

"In the UK, most leucistic birds tend to be blackbirds however a number of species have been seen to be affected.

The cases include maternal deaths, suspected brain injuries, term stillbirths and early neonatal deaths. Four of the cases occurred at Royal Derby and three at Queen's Hospital.

The investigations are not as a result of suspected wrongdoing, but to assess whether actions were taken in line with best practice, if more could have been done and if any lessons can be passed on to other hospitals.

There were 16 stillbirths at the Royal Derby Hospital last year, with the same amount in 2017 and more than double - 37 - in 2016.

In February last year, the Perinatal Institute found 19 baby deaths at the Royal Derby between 2013 and 2016 "might" or should" have been preventable.

Significant improvements were put in place at the hospital prior to the review to prevent further missed opportunities.
