• Thousands of farmers and other agricultural business people crammed into the Borderway Auction Marts for the Carlisle Agri-Expo, the organisers saying they'd not made many changes for the UK's impending exit from the EU because it was "just another challenge to be faced"
• South Lakeland councillors went against the advice of their officers and refused planning consent for a power station near a village in South Cumbria
• And a Keswick teenager found her tweet about epaulettes on her jacket went viral overnight - it's now been seen by millions of people and shared 60,000 times.

This is how people in Keswick have marked the end of the World War One, with a tumbling shroud of 5,000 knitted poppies pouring down the side of the parish church.

The Reverend Charles Hope, a former army chaplain who served in Afghanistan, set the target of creating the poppies and said he had seen first-hand the selfless sacrifice still being made by our troops today.

The artist Irene Rogan has brought a strip of the slag bank which is one of Millom's last surviving signs of its iron industry, into the town's Palladium hall.

It is part of an Arts Council-funded project, Moving Mountains, external, to bring international artists to the town.

The grass and minerals in the Millom Palladium are part of a free show this evening called Matter Matters, involving children from Blackcombe Primary School, video art and performances.

Police have cordoned off the back garden of a house on Chapel Street, Appleby, after a report of old shells being found there.

A Ministry of Defence bomb squad based in Catterick has been called in.

Councillors in Kendal have refused planning permission for a gas-fired power station near the village of Old Hutton in south Cumbria.

The developers, Statera Energy, had argued that being close to major gas mains and a large electricity sub-station, it was the perfect site, and officials recommended approval, external, saying the scheme had met the reasons that had previously led to permission being refused.

But around 20 residents argued that the rural area was not the right place to build such a development.

With the South Lakeland planning committee tied at five votes each way and one abstention, the chairman Mike Sweeney gave his casting vote against.

It's not yet known whether Statera Energy will appeal against the decision.

The A66 is blocked west of Penrith after an accident, while the air ambulance attends.

More than 50 records have been broken in often near-perfect conditions at this week's Coniston Records Week.

Out of 187 runs on the lake from power boats in varying classes, 56 records fell including 21 world records.

The youngest driver, Thomas Mantripp from Lowestoft, claimed six records in the hydroplane he drives lying flat on his stomach at speeds above 80mph.

Police say a 20-year-old man assaulted in an incident in Wigton Road, Carlisle, earlier today, had to be treated in hospital but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Three people, a 46-year-old man and two women, aged 43 and 32, have been arrested on suspicion of affray.

Police inquiries are continuing this afternoon in a property in Partridge Place.

Council tenants in the Barrow area will get a slight fall in rent from next April, under a four-year government policy.

Rents for houses and flats in Barrow, Dalton, Askam and Lindal, will be cut by one per cent, around 80p a week, a council committee has agreed.

Councillor Kevin Hamilton, chairman of Barrow's housing management forum, said the Government measure was aimed at cutting housing benefit, and it also meant the council has less money to spend on maintenance and services.

Councillor Hamilton told the meeting: "This is coming up to the fourth year now that we have had to decrease rents. I think the first year it came in the council lost about £295,000."

An estimated 12,000 farmers and others from the agricultural industries are expected at the Borderway Auction Mart today for the Cumbria Agri-Expo, a sort of indoor county show.

From the native Herdwick sheep of the Lake District, to cattle breeds from across the country, the event aims to show off the best of British livestock.

A driver who fled from police down residential streets in Carlisle at 65mph, jumped three red lights and finally got stuck in the mud in a park, has been given a suspended 12 month prison sentence.

At Carlisle Crown Court Mitchell Alexander Hughes, 21, of Bracken Close, Carlisle, admitted dangerous driving on 15 October last year, and was also given a three-year driving ban and 200 hours unpaid work.

Judge Peter Davies told Hughes' lawyer: "Your client is a remarkably stupid boy who could have caused a lot of damage; a lot of injury to health. He could have killed somebody."

A textile firm, Lappet Manufacturing, which makes Arab shawls, is laying off people at its weaving mills in Carlisle and Calder Vale, Preston.

In a statement the managing director Bob Quick said as many as 58 jobs would ago across both works, because of a lack of orders.

He said the firm would consult unions and other staff, saying orders had declined over the years and there had been problems in its main overseas market.

Nearly 250 people from Cumbria sought help from services for people wanting to stop themselves looking at child pornography in the first six months of a campaign, according to the charity running them.

The Lucy Faithfull Foundation counted calls to a helpline and visits to a website, external in the six months to January last year, and compared the numbers to the six months through to July this year, during a police publicity campaign.

The Cumbrian figure was 246, a 186% increase on the previous period.

Cumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall said: "This campaign is as much about helping people to stop their behaviour before they get into serious trouble and I urge anyone who recognises that they have or might be conducting illegal behaviour to go to the Stop It Now! website."

Barrow go to Ebbsfleet in the National League on the back of four defeats in league and cup, and manager Ian Evatt (above) says only hard work can turn their poor form around.

The Transport Secretary Chris Grayling will be in Cumbria this afternoon to announce a public consultation about changes to the A595 around Whitehaven.

Details of the road improvement scheme that will be outlined by Mr Grayling haven't yet been made public, but work is not expected to start before 2025.
