    Breaking

Reports that a young girl had been forced into a van in Barrow by a man wearing a balaclava were made up, police have said.

Cumbria police received reports that a girl aged between 11 and 13 was pulled into a vehicle in the Ormsgill Estate but these were "fabricated", it confirmed

Supt Rob O’Connor said: “Several child witnesses came forward to report this incident, and there were numerous resources dedicated to investigate overnight and in to today.

“We thank the public and the media for their help with our appeal, and are pleased that there was no young girl in any danger."

  12. Two men jailed for 'grossly degrading sexual attack'published at 14:55 GMT 16 March 2018

Two men have been jailed after a woman in Carlisle was repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted on Christmas Eve.

The victim initially thought strangers Kabir Hussain, 40, and 31-year-old Marco Martins were trying to help her as she left a city pub in a drunken state during the early hours.

Carlisle Crown Court heard she was "sandwiched" between the pair - and even carried at one stage - while being led through the city centre on the promise of being taken to a taxi.

But instead she was lured to a flat where she was raped twice by Hussain and once by a third man who was arrested by police but has since absconded.

During the first of Hussein's attacks, Martins sexually assaulted the terrified woman.

Hussain, of Dod Street, London, admitted two rape charges and one sexual assault.

Martins, from Borland Avenue in Carlisle, pleaded guilty to sexual assault.

    Breaking

A man has admitted attacking a Carlisle shop owner and possessing a blow torch and a machete in a public place.

Frank Robertson, 60, had been charged with attempted murder following an attack at the PB Sports store, Wigton Road, on 13 February.

At Carlisle Crown Court today, Robertson pleaded not guilty to that charge.

However, he pleaded guilty to three other offences - attempting to cause Vaughan Livesey grievous bodily harm, and possessing a blow torch and a machete in a public place.

Robertson's barrister Ian Hudson said that Mr Livesey's leg injuries amounted to "superficial burning and blistering" to "no more than 2%" of his body.

    PB Sports

Judge James Adkin adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report and a victim statement from Mr Livesey, who needed hospital treatment.

Robertson, of Stainton, near Penrith, will be sentenced on 13 April and was remanded in custody.
