  2. Expansion of DIRFT due to 'greater demand' for rail freightpublished at 17:56

    Work is due to start on the last phase of a scheme to expand the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal which is expected to create 9,000 jobs.

    Residents are worried about the amount of traffic, but rail freight experts say there is enough demand in the industry to justify a major expansion.

  4. Coventry cannabis factory closedpublished at 17:10

    Police in Coventry say they've closed down a cannabis factory, confiscating about 75 plants, at an address in Harefield Road, Stoke. 

    They say a 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

    The Liberal Democrat group on Warwickshire County Council has put forward proposals for an extraordinary meeting to re-visit the question of joining the West Midlands Combined Authority.

    The council voted not to join the first phase of membership last September along with Stratford District, who've just voted to revise their position.

    Wasps forward James Gaskell says he's relishing a home tie with Exeter in the quarter finals of the European Champions Cup. 

    A 51-10 bonus point victory over Leinster at the weekend secured qualification to the next stage of the tournament

    Gaskell admitted the margin of the win was something of a surprise.

  8. West Midlands Combined Authority 'welcomes' Stratford votepublished at 15:47

    The leadership team of the West Midlands Combined Authority say they "warmly welcome" Stratford's decision to join as a non-constituent member.

    Consultation on the first phase partnership has already started, so Stratford won't become a member until later in the year, but will be "welcomed around the shadow board table" until membership is formalised.

  9. Video: Stabbing victim's final steps captured on CCTVpublished at 15:34

    CCTV images of the final steps taken by a Coventry University lecturer before he was stabbed to death near a London tube station have been released by police.

    Daniel Young, 30, was attacked in Kendor Gardens, Morden while on his way for the second day of a new job at the university's London campus.

  12. Family fundraise for ex-military service dogpublished at 14:24

    A retired military dog, who served in Afghanistan, needs such expensive medical treatment his family have taken to a crowdfunding website to raise the mone, externaly.

    Six-year old Copper spent two years as part of the army's Explosive and Ammunition Unit before retiring to Rugby with the Proffitt family.

  14. Police fined after 'accident waiting to happen'published at 14:00

    The officer involved in a health and safety breach at West Midlands Police was disposing of a seized sub-machine gun in a hydraulic cutting machine when part of his index finger was severed. 

    The force admitted failing to ensure the welfare of its employees at an earlier hearing.

    Birmingham Crown Court heard the manual for the machine had been misplaced.

    Sentencing, Judge Richard Bond said: "Although it was suggested this was an isolated incident, the mislaying of the manual, the lack of a risk assessment and proper management mean this was an accident waiting to happen."

  15. ‘No clear motive’ for Morden stabbingpublished at 13:30

    The Met says it has still found “no clear motive” why a Coventry University lecturer was stabbed to death during rush hour near Morden Tube station.

    Daniel Young, 30, was killed a week ago in Kendor Gardens while he was making his way to his second day of a job at the university's London campus.

    Det Ch Insp Cliff Lyons said the response from the public had been “incredibly helpful” but appealed for anybody who was in the vicinity last Tuesday to contact police.

    Two men have been arrested over the killing. Both have been bailed pending further inquiries.
