The last of any showers dying away to leave a dry night across the BBC East region with clear spells and mainly light west to north-westerly winds.

Temperatures for many of us staying in double figures, but some spots could fall to around 9C (48F).

Apart from a few light showers, Saturday should begin largely fine and dry with some sunshine but eventually heavier showers will move west to east and some of these could produce hail and thunder.

The winds could become quite blustery for a time with isolated gusts of 40mph. Top temperatures around 21C (70F).

Sunday should be fine and dry with sunny spells. Cloud is expected to eventually thicken from the west and temperatures again climbing to around 21C (70F).

With both Peterborough United and Cambridge United falling just short of the play off places in League One and League Two respectively last time out, both sides, based on summer recruitment, ought to be at least flirting with the top of the table again this term.

Grant McCann’s Posh side have had a rigorous clear-out and are building a side in the manager’s own image. Shaun Derry’s U’s have pruned judiciously, and will be looking to start with a bang after failing to win any of their first eight league games at the beginning of last season. That awful run cost them, at minimum, a play-off berth.

Posh freshened-up

McCann has shipped out 11 players on a permanent basis, three more on loan and brought in 10 new faces along with a new assistant in David Oldfield.

Striker Ricky Miller, a proven goal-scorer at lower league level, will miss the first six matches through a suspension sustained whilst at Dover Athletic, but he’s a local boy who’s been prolific during the summer friendlies and could well prove to be one of the bargains of the close season.

Posh have a habit of buying or recruiting well from the lower reaches of the pyramid and turning front men into stars that do well higher up.

Britt Assombalonga, Craig Mackail-Smith, George Boyd and Conor Washington have all made the grade in either the Championship or the Premier League.

McCann looks, too, to have refreshed his defence in an effort to lock up the back door whilst allowing his side to continue to move forward with flair.

Cambridge gain a cutting edge

Shaun Derry’s task is different - too few goals scored by players other than the prodigious Luke Berry last season, and too many conceded at the wrong end at the wrong time.

A decent footballing side, there was not enough of an end product to match their often outstanding approach play.

Derry will be looking to add a clinical edge to his side, who have already proved they can shut opposition teams out when the need arises, notwithstanding the odd lapse in concentration.

Jabo Ibehere will add much-needed experience and a cutting edge up front and Uche Ikpeazu should thrive on the back of Ibehre’s know-how.

The U’s have lost talented goalkeeper Will Norris to Wolves, but have replaced him with David Forde, who recorded a record number of shut-outs as Portsmouth won League Two last term.

It does, though, look set to be another roller coaster of a season. Strap in, and turn on!

Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd releasing their influential psychadelic album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

Founding member Nick Mason spoke to 6 Music's Elizabeth Alker earlier today about the changing cultural landscape since it's release in 1967.

The sticksman said he never thought the album's legacy would last half a century.

Nick Mason on 50th anniversary of The Piper At The Gates of Dawn

Some 37 years ago this month, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was photographed with her husband Dennis at a visit to a telescope at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory in Cambridge.

Also caught on camera was Dr John Baldwin, the senior radio astronomer.

Work to overhaul Cambridge's traffic light system to reduce congestion has got under way.

The review of all 104 of the city's traffic signals is aimed at developing the "smartest traffic light system" in the country.

The project is being spearheaded by the Greater Cambridge Partnership, external.

Councillor Francis Burkitt, chair of the executive board, said 52 of the lights were more than 10 years old.

He said: "There are lots of things we need to do to sort out the transport problems in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire, this is just one of them.

"It will help cyclists, pedestrians and people in vehicles, particularly buses."

The traffic light improvements are part of £500m worth of transport projects in the region, which are due to be carried out over the next 15 years, said Mr Burkitt.

A Cambridge University student who was one of the breakout stars of University Challenge, has said his up-and-coming BBC Radio 4 radio show can be likened to "a clever version of Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey".

Bobby Seagull, who captained Emmanuel College on the last series of the quiz show, will team up with rival Cambridge contestant - Wolfson College's Eric Monkman - for Monkman & Seagull's Polymathic Adventure on BBC Radio 4 on 21 August.

Speaking on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Mr Seagull said they are "a fearsome duo".

"Eric's got such an eye for detail. I'm more of a big thinking, big ideas person," he said.

"A polymath is a person with a wide range of knowledge and we're exploring whether there's a role for polymaths in society.

"We've met academics, authors and scientists as well as former University Challenge contestant Stephen Fry."

Mr Seagull said the show is a one-off at the moment, but he expects there'll be more to come "if there's a demand for it".

Meet Rocco and Cory. They're degus. Very happy degus, as it happens.

These little rodents came from a home in Oxford that was overrun with more than 40 fellow degus, gerbils and hamsters.

They weren't particularly happy, all crammed together - so the RSPCA stepped in and these two brothers (below) ended up at the charity's Block Fen rehoming centre in Wimblington, Cambridgeshire.

As cute as they are, no-one wanted little Rocco and Cory and here they stayed for a more than year before volunteer Aga Clark thought enough was enough, and adopted the pair.

"They are two lovely little degus and I saw them and thought it was a shame they spent such a long time in the RSPCA without a forever home," she said.

The pair are now happily living in a big purpose-built cage with lots of toys to play with.

"I never expected they would be so much fun to be around - they are real characters," their new owner said.

Characters they may be, but just what is a degu?

It's a new one on me so I asked the RSPCA's "degu guru" Dr Jane Tyson to set me straight:

• Degus originate from Chile - not Oxford - and live for about six to seven years
• They're rodents and look a little like gerbils - but a bit bigger
• Being sociable little creatures they need another degu for companionship - but if you pair a male and female, make sure you have the male neutered or you could end up with a colony
• They like to chow down on commercial guinea pig food containing seeds and grains, as well as fresh vegetables and green alfalfa
• They need to be kept at the right temperature as they can easily overheat, and need access to a dust bath twice a week
• Degus like to be active so need lots of opportunities to dig, climb and chew things

The Mars One project, external is hoping to take a group of people to the planet on a one-way trip, funded by TV coverage.

The first flight with two men and two women is scheduled for 2031 and would be a one-way trip - they’d stay there for the rest of their lives.

The Dutch company behind it first advertised for volunteers in 2013 and more than 200,000 people originally applied.

That has now been whittled down to 100 finalists, which includes University of Cambridge student, Ryan MacDonald.

Ryan is carrying out research at Cambridge into ways to detect life outside Earth and has written software for a new NASA telescope.

He said: "To be considered as one of just a hundred people on this planet who may get to go on one of the first expeditions to Mars is an incredibly exciting and enticing prospect.

"Thinking about the science we could do there and inspiring young people with this mission - it’s a wonderful time to be alive."

Ryan is determined to stay in the selection process and training is planned to start towards the end of next year.

A schoolgirl who lost her father and broke her collar bones in a crash on the A140 has received more than 100 "get well soon" cards in the post.

The family of Jacee Fisk appealed for cards to cheer up the seven-year-old who was seriously injured in the incident near Mendlesham Industrial Estate on 25 July.

Her mum has told BBC Suffolk today she has also received vouchers and handmade gifts.

She said seeing a smile on her face, thanks to the kindness of complete strangers, is "amazing".

A 50-year-old man from Wisbech, Dalius Matulaitis, has been charged in connection with the crash and is due to appear at Ipswich Crown Court later this month.
