  2. Watch: A window into Birmingham's pastpublished at 17:53 GMT 3 March 2016

    Earlier we told you how a treasure trove of photos showcased bygone Brum.

    University of Birmingham staff stumbled across the pictures, taken by amateur photographer Phyllis Nicklin, in a cupboard. After their popularity grew with the website BrumPic, they have been put on display in the city.

  5. Sedgley road closed for repairs after gas leakpublished at 17:15 GMT 3 March 2016

    A Sedgley road has been closed for emergency repairs after a gas leak.

    Dudley Council said it did not yet know how long the work at Greenleigh, between Greenleigh and Wolverhampton Road, could take.

    A diversion is in place.

    An expedition to the North Pole, which is being sponsored by a Lichfield businessman, is having to drastically change its route at the 11th hour because of dangerous Arctic conditions.

    Mark Tweddle, the managing director of Jupiter Marketing, told us his friend Mark Wood and his team were due to leave on Saturday on their 600-mile journey from the Russian Arctic Coast, but have decided to put it off for a month.

    Mr Wood has previously said it could be the last expedition of its kind, because of the effect climate change is having on the Arctic.

  12. Hospital's heart surgery results under scrutiny amid high death ratespublished at 15:00 GMT 3 March 2016

    A hospital has been told it must report the results of its heart surgery operations after investigators found death rates that were too high. 

    The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has stepped in to monitor Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and will receive weekly results about the outcomes for adult heart patients.

    An independent team from the Royal College of Surgeons is also conducting a review to determine what improvements are needed. 

    Calculations by The Guardian, external suggest that over a three-year period, 17 people may have died who should have survived.

  13. Interactive touchable map telling of Shakespeare's life and workspublished at 14:42 GMT 3 March 2016

    A touchable map telling of Shakespeare's life and legacy has been officially unveiled today at the Library of Birmingham.

    The interactive feature, which is free to use, was opened by BBC Director of England and Director of Radio Helen Boaden and Birmingham councillor Waseem Zaffar.

    The resource is a collaboration between the BBC, the University of Birmingham and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

    Ms Boaden said it would act like "a camp fire" around which people could use digital technology but for one of the oldest traditions - to share stories about and by The Bard.

  14. Football: Knee injury set to rule West Brom defender out of Euro 2016published at 14:26 GMT 3 March 2016

    Northern Ireland's Chris Brunt is set to miss this summer's Euro 2016 finals in France after undergoing knee surgery.

    The 31-year-old defender has an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which is expected to rule him out of action for six months.

    Brunt, capped 54 times, sustained the injury during West Brom's 3-2 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

    The left-back played in eight matches during the Euro qualifying campaign but faces a lengthy rehabilitation period.

  15. Cricket: Edgbaston has the best atmosphere - fans votepublished at 14:05 GMT 3 March 2016

    The home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club has been officially recognised as having the best atmosphere. 

    Spectators at last summer's Ashes Test rated the Edgbaston ground 9.5 out of 10 in a study of UK venues by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

    It may have helped that homegrown hero Ian Bell led England to a crushing eight-wicket win against the old enemy, and such was the dominance, it was temporarily in doubt the game would last beyond two days.

    Lichfield District Council says the vehicle, full of baled waste and tyres, was left in a layby in mid-December between Weeford and Bassets Pole. 

    It's now been towed to a waste transfer station in Warwickshire and the authority says it's trying to find out who's responsible.

    On Midlands Today this lunchtime we'll be hearing claims that a green wall of plants in Birmingham has cut pollution.

  18. Owner hit with £6k court bill for allowing empty home to fall into disrepairpublished at 13:01 GMT 3 March 2016

    An owner of an eyesore Oldbury home which fell into such a state of disrepair water leaked into the neighbour's house, has been handed a court bill of more than £6,000.

    Sandwell Council said it took the owner of the home in Dudley Road West to court after they failed to comply with an improvement notice and an abatement notice.

    The authority said the roof "failed" and water got into the house next door.
