A man was shot in his chest and leg in a "targeted attack" in south Birmingham last night, police have revealed.

A 21-year-old man was taken to hospital with two wounds, but is now in a stable condition following the shots at a home in Redhill Road, Hawkesley, at around 22:20 on Thursday.

The West Midlands force is appealing for information. It said it was thought "there was no threat to the wider community" at this stage of the investigation.

A lane is closed on the exit slip road of the M6 northbound at J9 for Wednesbury, because of a breakdown, drivers are warned.

Former Premier League footballer Marcus Bent has been given a suspended 12-month prison sentence after admitting affray and possession of cocaine. 

He faced charges after an incident in which he was reportedly Tasered by police responding to a break-in at his home in Esher, Surrey, last September.

Bent was also given a two-month curfew and 200 hours of compulsory unpaid work by the judge at Guildford Crown Court. The 37-year-old striker, who had spells at Birmingham City and on loan at Wolves, had previously denied affray but changed his plea.

School crossing patrols which were facing the axe by Birmingham City Council have been given a reprieve for next year, sparing 180 jobs.

The authority had mooted cuts to the service in budget proposals announced in December but has instead announced a trust will be launched in a bid to fund the service going forward.

Leader of the Labour-run council John Clancy said there had been some "recalculations after a very late settlement [of funding] from government”.

The GMB union welcomed the council's latest stance but called for funding to be guaranteed beyond next year.

The council says it is continuing talks with "businesses and other potential partners to fund the service".

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in Derby in connection with an attempted robbery in Digbeth that ended in the death of a businessman. 

Akhtar Javeed, aged 56, died after being shot in the neck during a suspected robbery at his Direct Source 3 warehouse on 3 February. 

Earlier this week his daughter Lilas Javeed appealed for anyone with information to come forward to help police. It is unclear if the latest arrest is connected with that appeal.

Mr Saini's MP John Spellar had questioned his arrest, saying he was protected by the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Labour MP for Warley had been urging the Foreign Office to intervene over Mr Saini's case.

He said the Indian government should not be trying to "grab" someone while they were on holiday.

Father-of-four Mr Saini, who came to the UK about 13 years ago, was being held in a Portuguese jail.

In the last few minutes, the MP for Warley John Spellar has told us a man from the Black Country who was facing extradition to India over alleged terror offences, has been freed. 

Paramjeet Singh Saini - who was being held in Portugal - had always denied his alleged involvement in the murder of a Sikh politician in 2009 and bomb attacks in India in 2010.

He and his family had earlier been granted refugee status to stay in the UK until 2023.

Gunshots were fired in the early hours of this morning in Handsworth, police have revealed, saying two cars have been damaged but no one has been reported injured.

West Midlands Police said its officers were called to Thornhill Road, Birmingham just after 00:30.

The road will remain closed for several hours from the junction of Montague Road up to the junction with Holly Road while forensic experts continue to search the area for evidence, officers said.

Tony Pulis's thoughts in advance of tomorrow's game at Everton are centred on the injury problems in his squad.

Craig Dawson has a chance of recovering to play, but Pulis is still without several key players, and some of the fringe players who battled through the FA Cup tie at Peterborough on Wednesday are feeling the effects, having not had much first-team football this season.

"We're just resting, cuddling, comforting, hopefully putting people back together to play," Pulis told BBC WM. "We'll have a headcount today... and give them as much rest as we can."

Two men have been jailed for attacking a mourner after a wake at a Solihull pub. 

A man who had earlier attended his brother's funeral was waiting for a lift outside the Olton Tavern on Lode Lane with a friend before they were set upon for challenging Reiss Johnson and Daniel Stirling about their anti-social behaviour, said police.

Johnson and Stirling reacted by throwing a banana skin and a shot glass before punching and kicking the man who had just attended his brother's funeral, the force said.

The 27-year-old Johnson, of New Summer Street, Newtown, Birmingham, was jailed for 16 months for two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, while Stirling, 22, of Cotesbourne Road, Solihull, was jailed for six months for one similar charge at Birmingham Crown Court.
