     A police dog is preparing to 'bow' out of service after helping make 170 arrests, external.

    Kane, the oldest serving general purpose dog in the Beds, Cambs and Herts dog unit, has worked for nearly 10 years.

    His final day of action will be on Monday.

  3. Minister visits Watford hospital to check its progresspublished at 17:40

    The Minister for Care Quality has been visited Watford General to check on its progress after the hospital was put into special measures.

    Ben Gummer met staff and patients at the hospital after receiving a rating of "inadequate" by CQC inspectors in September.

    "There's a great deal of passion at the hospital, they recognise that things were not as they should've been and they're working to make it right," Mr Gummer said.

    A jury has heard how a white van driver drove over a man's head after the pair of them had been fighting in Hertfordshire.

    The prosecution told St Albans Crown Court that, after a short confrontation in the street in Turnford, Michael Turner, 57, of Landau Way, got in his van and deliberately drove at Frank Buckley, 51. He knocked him down, then ran over him and killed him.

    Despite the efforts of bystanders and the emergency services, Mr Buckley died. He had injuries to his chest, pelvis, and a broken skull. Mr Turner told police Mr Buckley had sprayed fluid in his eyes and he had been frightened of him. He denies murder. The case continues.

    A man charged with the murder of a pedestrian in a Hertfordshire village knocked the victim down before reversing back over him, a court has heard.

    Michael Turner, 57, of Landua Way, Turnford, is appearing at St Albans Crown Court in connection with the incident last June which led to the death of Frank Buckley, 51.

    The prosecution told the jury that following a short confrontation, Mr Turner "deliberately turned his van into Frank Buckley and knocked him down. He then ran over and killed him." Mr Turner denies the charge.

    Bomb Disposal experts have been called in after an explosive device, believed to be from the Second World War era, was handed in at Luton Police Station.

    The device has been taken to rural farmland and destroyed via a controlled explosion.

    A man sentenced to life in prison for trying to kill his ex-wife and her partner at a family mediation centre in Luton has been described as "an extremely dangerous man" by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

    Fatmir Mula (pictured), 39, from London, was sentenced to life in prison on two counts of attempted murder and must serve at least 11 years. Luton Crown Court heard how he had hidden a knife in his rucksack for the attack.

    Chief crown prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern CPS, Adrian Foster, called the attack "completely unjustified and unprovoked" saying it "could have been even more serious".

  10. Police 'pleased' man was found guilty of trying to kill ex-wifepublished at 16:20

    Bedfordshire Police are "pleased" a man has been found guilty and sentenced for the attempted murder of his ex-wife and her partner.

    Fatmir Mula, 39, who lives in London, was found guilty yesterday of attempted murder at the Purple Contact Centre in Luton last July. He was sentenced to life for two counts of attempted murder with a minimum term of 11 years.

    "The ferocious attack could easily have resulted in the death of either or both of the victims. This behaviour is intolerable," Det Con Scott Hannam said.

    It's one of nine areas across England where government officials will work with police, councils and other organisations to stop gangs taking advantage of vulnerable young people.

    This latest programme builds on an initiative that was brought in after the riots of 2011.

    A Hertfordshire man has been found guilty of being part of the gang which carried out the Hatton Garden jewellery raid in London last Easter. 

    Carl Wood, 58, of Elderbeck Close, Cheshunt, has been convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiracy to transfer stolen property. Two others standing trial were also found guilty and a taxi-driver from Essex has been cleared.

    The sentencing of Carl Wood has been adjourned until 7 March.

  18. Dunstable attack leaves man with facial injuriespublished at 13:48

    A man was left with serious facial injuries after he was followed from his car in Dunstable and attacked, in what police describe as "a nasty assault".

    The incident happened at 17:30 on Tuesday when the victim walked from the Quadrant shopping centre car park to the Asda car park, where he was knocked down.

    The offender is described as white, between 17 and 19-years-old, of athletic build, with short fair hair and about 5ft 10ins. He wore a light-coloured tracksuit.
