    Conservatives have taken St Ives in Cornwall from the Lib Dems, with Derek Thomas securing 18,491 votes.

    Nationally, the Tories have a majority of 12 MPs after the results in all 650 seats were announced.

    In one early declaration in Rossendale, external, the Labour mayor Tom Aldred has lost his seat to the Conservatives and there's been another Conservative gain in Rossendale - in the Cribden ward - by just eight votes.

    Speaking outside No 10 after visiting Buckingham Palace, he said the UK was "on the brink of something special".

    The Conservatives have 330 seats - four more than needed for a Commons majority - their first such victory since 1992.

    Liverpool University's Professor Jon Tonge says Labour was "way off the pace" in the region although it claimed the notable scalp of Conservative employment minister Esther McVey in the Wirral West constituency.

    He also says Leigh's Andy Burnham is "in pole position" in the new race to be Labour leader while Westmorland & Lonsdale's Tim Farron was "the only obvious successor" and a "shoo-in" to replace the outgoing Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

    Conservative Chris Green has said he was on a "knife-edge" as the votes were counted for the Bolton West constituency.

    He said: "Looking at the bundles - I couldn't call it."

    Labour also won the seat narrowly at the last general election after several recounts.

    Labour MP Simon Danczuk, who comfortably held his seat in Rochdale, said Ed Miliband's Labour campaign had the "wrong personnel in place" and focused on the "wrong policies".
