Image source, ReutersThe Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia visited the US today for the first time since the 2018 murder of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi, which occurred inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Mohammed bin Salman received a very warm welcome from US President Donald Trump - who told reporters the crown prince was "extremely respected" and has done a "phenomenal job".
The pair presented a united front before the press - with bin Salman agreeing mid-conference to raise Saudi investment in the US to $1tn, and the president then staunchly defending the prince when questions arose about Khashoggi.
Trump went on to contradict established US intelligence, published in 2021, which concluded the crown prince had approved the journalist's murder.
"He knew nothing," Trump said, referring to the de facto Saudi leader. For his part, bin Salman called Khashoggi's killing a "huge mistake".
The president was separately pushed on the Epstein files - which the US House of Representatives has now voted to release - but responded by calling the journalist asking the question a "terrible reporter".
He went on to repeat his denial of any involvement with the convicted sex offender.
Bin Salman has left the White House for now, but a lavish dinner in the East Room is still on the agenda. An official also told the BBC that Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was due to appear at the White House today (he's yet to be seen, however).
