We now know which films and TV programmes have been nominated for the 2026 Golden Globes Awards.

Frankenstein, Hamnet and Sinners are all nominated for best drama film.

The films shortlisted in the box office and cinematic achievement category include F1, KPop Demon Hunters, Sinners, Weapons and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.

One Battle After Another - starring Leonardo DiCaporio - has the most nominations, with nine in total including best picture, director and screenwriter.

Coming close after that is Sentimental Value with eight nominations, Sinners with seven, and Hamnet with six.

Meanwhile Netflix hit Adolescence is in the running for best television motion picture category, with Owen Cooper up for best supporting male actor - television.

    But there were some surprises.

Wicked: For Good has five nominations but it was snubbed for best musical or comedy. Our entertainment reporter says that is "perhapsthe biggest shock of the day."

Ariana Grande is up for best supporting female actor, while Cynthia Erivo is in the running for best female actor in the musical/ comedy category.

But the best female actor (drama) category took an unexpected turn with Eva Victor nominated for her performance in independent film Sorry, Baby, about a woman navigating life after a sexual assault.

We’ll find out the winners at the glittering awards ceremony in Los Angeles on 11 January.

We're closing our live coverage now, but you can read the more in our news story, and we also have the full list of nominations for you to read.

Some films were totally shut out

Wicked: For Good missing best musical might have been the most notable snub, but many other movies were shut out entirely.

Missile thriller A House of Dynamite received zero nominations, as did sports biopic Christy.

But there were also some pleasant surprises

Weapons star Amy Madigan pulled off a nomination in the supporting actress category - she has been a passion pick for many awards pundits in recent weeks.

But a nomination in the best drama actress category for Sorry, Baby star Eva Victor was perhaps the biggest surprise of the day.

One Battle After Another is the film to beat

Some of the initial hype might have settled, but there's no doubt that it's the hot favourite as we begin the three-month extravaganza that is awards season.

However, early frontrunners often have a target on their backs, so we'll have to wait and see if the film can maintain its momentum.

Adolescence could be the UK's biggest hope on the night

But it was a weaker showing in the film categories, with only Cynthia Erivo and Emily Blunt representing the UK.

The Globes still love A-list stars

Even some actors whose Oscar chances have been looking shaky, such as George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Dwayne Johnson and Julia Roberts, scored a nomination, giving them a much-needed boost.

  3. One Battle After Another leads with nine nominationspublished at 15:09 GMT 8 December 2025

It’s been a good morning in California for the cast and crew of One Battle After Another, which leads the nominations being up for a total of nine categories including best picture, director and screen writer.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s film is followed by Sentimental Value, which has eight nominations and Sinners with seven.

Then it’s Hamnet with six, and Frankenstein and Wicked: For Good are both up for five.

The White Lotus leads the way for TV, that has six nominations. Adolescence has five and Only Murderers in the Building and Severance each have four.

  4. How the winners will be decidedpublished at 15:04 GMT 8 December 2025

Now that the nominations for the Golden Globe Awards 2026 have been announced, let's look ahead to what happens next.

All the categories are voted on by a group of in international entertainment journalists - a point of difference with the Oscars, where nominees and winners are selected by people who work in the film industry.

The group of journalists voting on the Globes will now receive the nominations list, and each vote for one nominee in each category.

The big night is 11 January when the stars assemble at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California to find out the winners. The ceremony is being hosted for a second year running by comedian Nikki Glaser.

Diversity has been a big issue in Hollywood over the last decade, and several awards bodies (including the Globes) have expanded their membership to increase the range of voters.

That has resulted in an increased presence for foreign-language films, with the best picture win for the South Korean film Parasite at the Oscars in 2020 being a particular turning point.

There's a huge number of acclaimed international films in the race this year, including the emotive Sentimental Value, about two daughters who reconnect with their estranged father, which received eight Globe nominations today.

Another strong contender is It Was Just An Accident, a superb film from Jafar Panahi that tells the story of a man who sets out to get his revenge on the former Iranian intelligence officer who tortured him in prison.

That won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival and picked up four Globe nominations today.

Other foreign-language nominees include The Secret Agent and No Other Choice (which scored three each), and Nouvelle Vague and The Voice of Hind Rajab (one apiece).

Why has One Battle After Another picked up so many nominations?published at 14:38 GMT 8 December 2025

One Battle After Another was a middling hit in cinemas. It took $204m (£153m) at the box office, but it was also extremely expensive to make, costing an estimated $150m (£113m).

However, this movie has been widely seen as more of an awards play than a box office juggernaut.

Critics adored the film - many awarded it five stars - and awards pundits have been saying for several months that it could be the movie that finally wins Paul Thomas Anderson an Oscar for best director and best picture.

One Battle After Another tells the story of a former revolutionary who reunites with some of his former friends to get back his kidnapped daughter. At 2hrs 42mins, it's a long film, but it's a fun ride (with a cracking car chase at the end).

The large number of nominations it received at the Globes is partly down to how many actors appear in the film. A whopping five of its nine nominations are for its on-screen stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor and Benicio del Toro.

The film is also up for best musical or comedy, while Anderson scored nominations for best director and best screenplay, and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood is recognised for the film's score.

How the blockbusters performedpublished at 14:27 GMT 8 December 2025

Box office smash Wicked: For Good has picked up five Globe nominations, but there aren’t as many blockbusters in the race as you might expect.

That could be partly because one of the other major releases, Avatar: Fire and Ash, hasn’t been quite as warmly received at early screenings as the first two films in the sci-fi franchise.

We'll see how it performs with the public later this month, but it only scored two nominations today - for box office and cinematic achievement, and its theme song performed by Miley Cyrus.

However, there is a gigantic hit from the world of animation, with Zootopia 2 (known as Zootropolis 2 in the UK), already having made more than $900m (£675m) worldwide in just 12 days.

The other films nominated in the box office and cinematic achievement category are F1, KPop Demon Hunters, Sinners, Weapons and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.

It’s worth pointing out that the rise of streaming means cinema is struggling generally, with far fewer movies convincing people to venture out.

Many films nominated in the race, such as Frankenstein, After The Hunt and Jay Kelly were primarily streaming releases and only received a short, tokenistic run in cinemas. Most audiences will be watching them at home.

Fewer Brits in the race this yearpublished at 14:08 GMT 8 December 2025

    Steven McIntosh
    Entertainment reporter

Wicked: For Good star Cynthia Erivo is one of the few Brits in the film awards race this year

It's not a vintage year for British nominees, with only Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good) and Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine) representing for the UK in the film acting categories at the Globes.

However, there are also two Irish actors in contention – Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal – with Buckley in particular a front-runner to win her category of best drama actress.

And there’s more British representation in the TV categories, thanks in large part to Adolescence, the hugely acclaimed Netflix hit which dominated September’s Emmys.

Actors Owen Cooper, Erin Doherty, Ashley Walters and Stephen Graham, who also co-created and co-wrote the series, are all recognised for their performances in the drama about a teenage boy accused of stabbing a female classmate.

If this momentum keeps up, it could turn into a full awards season sweep, with more opportunities for the show to be recognised at the Actor Awards (formerly SAG Awards) in March, and the Bafta TV Awards in May.

Best actress in drama category throws up surprisespublished at 13:57 GMT 8 December 2025

    Steven McIntosh
    Entertainment reporter

The major acting categories have thrown up some really intriguing surprises - particularly in best actress (drama).

Big stars such as Sydney Sweeney (Christy) missed out, but there was room for some other A-listers, including Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love) and Julia Roberts (After The Hunt).

The biggest surprise, however, is Eva Victor, who is nominated for her performance in the independent US film Sorry, Baby, about a woman navigating life after a sexual assault.

The category was completed by Irish actress Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), who is seen as the front-runner, and US actress Tessa Thompson (Hedda).

  10. Analysis

Wicked: For Good gets biggest snub of the daypublished at 13:53 GMT 8 December 2025

    Steven McIntosh
    Entertainment reporter

Wicked: For Good missing out on a nomination for best musical or comedy film is perhaps the biggest shock of the day.

After all, it's been a huge box office success, and its predecessor Wicked was a winner at last year's Globes.

However, the sequel has been met with far less enthusiasm than the first film.

That's partly due to the source material - the second half of the stage musical is widely regarded as being weaker than the first.

There are a few reasons for that - the musical's best known hits all feature in the first act, and therefore were in the first film, but the second half is also much gloomier, and arguably drags more.

This does not bode well for its Oscar chances, but at least its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were recognised in the acting categories.
