Hillary Clinton's deposition is still ongoing and it could be a while before it concludes. Earlier in the day, James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight committee, said it could take all day.

But what happens next? Not much is known about what will follow. The former secretary of state released a public statement before her deposition and it is unclear if she will talk to journalists gathered at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center after her closed-door deposition.

Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the committee, has called for the release of the transcript of her deposition within the next 24 hours but it is not known if the Republican-led committee will do that.

But what we do know is that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, will also testify before the committee tomorrow.

Hillary Clinton’s advisor, Nick Merrill, listened closely from the side as Democrats on the committee strongly defended the former Secretary of State to those of us gathered in the press.

They did not reveal what questions Hillary Clinton has been asked so far, instead suggesting that this has been a waste of time with nothing new learned.

Several of us shouted questions trying to get a sense of the atmosphere in the room, but Ranking Member Robert Garcia was reluctant to go into detail at this stage.

He said he wants the public to have access to the full, unedited transcript within 24 hours. So the wait continues to get a sense of how the deposition is unfolding.

It will be interesting to see how Republicans characterise the day.

  3. Democrat lawmakers head back to depositionpublished at 19:47 GMT

That's all for now from the Democrats, who have now gone back inside to rejoin the Clinton deposition.

We're not sure if Republicans will come out to do their own press update.

Earlier, we heard from Committee Leader James Comer, who gave us an overview of what lawmakers might be asking Clinton.

We'll bring you more as it happens.

  4. Clinton answering all questions, wants press allowed inpublished at 19:44 GMT

In response to another question, Garcia adds that when a photo of Clinton from the deposition was leaked earlier today, she continued to demand that press to be allowed into the room.

He says Clinton is answering all the questions asked.

The lawmakers are taking questions from reporters now.

Asked about the leaked photo, Garcia says punishment should come from the majority saying its release was "completely against the rules" and "not acceptable".

  6. Democrats want full unedited transcript of Clinton testimonypublished at 19:41 GMT

Garcia is now saying that House Democrats want the full, unedited transcript of Hillary Clinton's deposition released in the next 24 hours.

"We need the public, and the American people have a right, to know exactly what she said, what questions were asked of her, and how she responded. That's transparency. She herself requested that the press and the public be allowed into the deposition," he says.

He adds that he hopes tomorrow's deposition from former president Bill Clinton will be made public so the press can be allowed inside the room.

  7. Panel must 'do our jobs'published at 19:39 GMT

Missouri Democratic Representative Wesley Bell is speaking now.

He says the deposition today is "political theatre", and that certain lawmakers on the committee are more interested in tweets than making certain that "justice is served".

He calls on the panel to "do our jobs".

  8. Democrat calls proceedings an 'unserious clown show'published at 19:37 GMT

Representative Yassamin Ansari of Arizona is speaking now.

She calls today's proceedings a very "unserious clown show" of a deposition. Ansari says Republicans are more concerned with getting a photo opp of Clinton than " actually getting to the truth and holding anyone accountable".

  9. Garcia says Trump needs to testify to committeepublished at 19:34 GMT

Garcia criticises the US Justice Department and calls for the release of missing Epstein files that mention President Donald Trump.

He says this committee has set a new precedent of talking to presidents and former presidents.

He says Democrats want President Trump to testify to the committee and that needs to happen right now, he adds.

  10. Top Democrat says Republicans broke own rules with 'unacceptable' release of photopublished at 19:32 GMT

Garcia says it's unacceptable that Republicans in the House Oversight Committee have broken their own rules and released photos from inside the closed-door deposition room.

He adds that it was gracious of Hillary Clinton and her team to allow the deposition to continue after the leak.

Earlier, Lauren Boebert said she sent a photo of Clinton from inside the deposition room to conservative influencer Benny Johnson. Boebert said it was taken prior to the start of the deposition.

  11. News conference under waypublished at 19:30 GMT

Ranking Democrat Robert Garcia is now giving a mid-deposition update.

He begins by saying the deposition has now been going for about two and a half hours. He reasserts that Clinton never met Jeffrey Epstein, never went to the late sex offender's private island, and never went on his plane.

"She also had no knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein's horrific crimes," he said, adding that she is completely cooperating with the deposition.

Lauren Boebert, who took the photo of Clinton at the hearing, is a Republican Congresswoman from the US state of Colorado.

Formerly a gun rights activist, Boebert was first elected to Congress in 2021. She is a fierce ally of President Donald Trump, and has repeated unfounded claims that the 2020 election was "stolen" after his loss to Joe Biden.

The congresswoman texted the photo to Benny Johnson, a conservative influencer and podcaster. Johnson has over 4 million followers on X and has contributed to conservative media outlets including Breitbart.

On his show, he has interviewed leading conservatives such as Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, as well as more fringe right-wing conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones.

  14. Boebert defends podcaster over leaked photopublished at 19:06 GMT

Colorado Republican Representative Lauren Boebert has defended the conservative podcaster Benny Johnson for posting the photo she took of Hillary Clinton appearing before the US House Oversight committee on which she sits.

The hearing is a closed-door deposition.

"Benny did nothing wrong," she says in an online post. "Proceeding with deposition."

Earlier, Boebert confirmed to the BBC that she had sent the image to Johnson.

  15. Benny Johnson reacts to response to leaked photopublished at 18:45 GMT

Conservative influencer Benny Johnson, who earlier posted a photo of the proceedings on X, has claimed in another post that Hillary Clinton "just STORMED out of the Epstein Deposition because I posted a photo of her testifying".

The BBC has asked Clinton's team about the claim that she "stormed out".

Johnson says the deposition is being filmed and is expected to be released publicly.

Both Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, wanted their depositions to be public.

Johnson adds that Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert gave him permission to post the photo she took before the hearing started with credit.

The hearing was paused for a short time after the existence of the photo became known, but then resumed.

The BBC understands that the deposition has now resumed.

There was a pause after Republican Representative Lauren Boebert sent a photo of Hillary Clinton inside the closed door session to a conservative YouTuber, Benny Johnson.

As a reminder, the session is closed, but is being recorded and will be released later. But this tense moment comes after months of negotiations and outright hostility between the Clintons' lawyers and the committee.

The Clintons wanted a public hearing.

Representative Boebert has just shared a statement with the BBC about the photo that political commentator Benny Johnson shared of Clinton inside the deposition room, which he says Boebert gave to him.

“All good," Boebert told the BBC over text message. "Photo was prior to hearing just as the witnesses opening statement was released prior to the deposition beginning. Fun little break.”

She emphasised that no one is "in trouble", and declined to comment further on whether this violated any rules regarding picture taking at depositions.

  18. Conservative podcaster Benny Johnson posts image from testimony on Xpublished at 17:57 GMT

US political commentator Benny Johnson shared an image, external on X of Hillary Clinton testifying under oath in front of the Oversight Committee.

Johnson said in the post that, "Clinton does not look happy" and that US Representative Lauren Boebert provided the image.

The post has led to a pause in the testimony.

We are outside the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center waiting for updates from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s closed door deposition.

Republicans on the committee have said they will come out every hour to share what they have learned and have insisted the deposition today isn't a political stunt.

    But is it?

On the one hand, Democrats joined Republicans to threaten the Clintons with contempt of Congress if they didn’t appear. But today, the committee’s Democrats emphasised that there’s no indication that Hillary Clinton had any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and that President Trump, who is named far more in the Epstein files, should now also answer questions under oath.

James Walkinshaw, one of the Democrats who spoke here, slammed today’s deposition as a political exercise and part of a long-running fever dream to lock up the Clintons.

Democrats are now betting that by setting this example with the Clintons, it will actually increase pressure on President Trump.

No doubt, the public will be dissecting the Clintons' responses and their credibility.

  20. Schumer pushes for more info on Epstein investigationspublished at 17:51 GMT

At the same time Hillary Clinton's testimony was abruptly paused, Senator Chuck Schumer, the Minority leader, is holding a press conference about the Epstein files. He demands the Department of Justice and the FBI preserve behind-the-scenes records from their investigations into Epstein and his co-conspirators.

"We want to know who was involved in the decision to hide the truth, and a warning to the Trump cronies working on this: We will know if you are destroying documents and evidence, you will not outrun the law," Schumer says.

"You will not outrun the truth. This isn't political. The survivors deserve the truth, and the American people are demanding it."

We're pivoting away from this press conference now to bring you further updates on the apparent photo leak from the Clinton testimony.
