Malcolm Taylor, the authority's executive member for highways and transportation, says the council continues to treat "priority routes" with its fleet of about 100 ploughs.

“I would like to assure the public that we are using every resource available to us to treat our network and will continue to do so for as long as is necessary,” he adds.

Farmer Jack Hallam has been helping out his community near Egton Bridge, west of Whitby.

He says: “It’s pretty grim, it’s blizzarding. There’s about five inches of snow and it’s coming down heavy.

“It snowed through the night and at about 06:30 GMT, we were out on the road.

"All the farmers are out ploughing and gritting but it’s a bit of a fighting battle for them because as fast as they plough, it’s coming down."

The farmer adds his efforts are just "part of living in a village".

“Where we are, the winter is pretty bleak but you just help out," he says.

"If you see someone stuck in a village, you give them a pull or a push.”

“It’s clear in some places and I think that’s probably giving people a false sense of security when setting off,” he tells the BBC.

“I’m just waiting for the details to come in now to get a midwife out to help some of her patients."

The club says it will update supporters "as soon as possible" after the 14:30 GMT inspection at their temporary home ground in Bridlington.

Earlier, manager Jonathan Greening said: "I think we might need some volunteers to go down and shovel the snow off."

  10. How to protect your taps and pipes during the cold snappublished at 15:42 GMT 20 November 2025

Yorkshire Water has shared some tips on how to protect your homes during the wintry weather.

Communications manager Emily Brady says: “Check for pipes, taps, cisterns, tanks, and water meters in unheated areas that might be exposed to the cold.

"You can also protect your outdoor taps with a tap cover to stop them freezing.”

If your water isn't running, it may be frozen.

Here's what Yorkshire Water recommends to do to get water running again:

    • Check all exposed pipes for any leaks or bursts. If you can’t see anything then turn the tap on at your kitchen sink and heat the pie with a hairdryer.
    • Never use a naked flame to defrost a pipe.
    • If a pipe has burst, then turn your water off at the stop tap to minimise damage and water loss and find a trusted plumber.

Rebecca and her son Felix have been out enjoying the snow in Eastfield, in Scarborough, today.

As a self-confessed "winter girl", Rebecca said she was enjoying having a day off, but perhaps not as much as Felix.

"He was asking to go sledging at about 7.30am, when it was still dark out," she said.

  13. Cold spell expected to give way to milder weekendpublished at 15:15 GMT 20 November 2025

    Paul Hudson
    Weather presenter, BBC Look North

The first cold spell of the season has brought significant snowfall to the North York Moors and surrounding areas in the last 24 hours.

It’s a huge change following one of the mildest starts to November on record.

The relatively warm North sea, clashing with the cold air coming directly from the Arctic, creates deep instability and is the reason why the snowfall has been so heavy, even with some reports of hail and thunder.

But it will be a short cold spell, with snow showers dying out overnight and a milder weekend to follow.

In fact, cold snaps in November are common.

Only last year, almost to the day, snow fell across parts of Yorkshire.

And in November 2023, the Whitby to Pickering road was closed due to heavy snow on the 29th of the month.

Ian Webster travelled to the village of Goathland, in the North York Moors, yesterday lunchtime during "light snow".

But he got stranded when conditions worsened.

He says: "I managed to find myself a nice warm guesthouse and I stayed there overnight."

The village has been cut off, Ian says, but adds that as a Yorkshireman, he's prepared.

"We all wear big coats, don't we. It's grim up north!"

  16. Met Office issues yellow warning for ice on Fridaypublished at 14:32 GMT 20 November 2025

The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for ice, due to come into force across North and East Yorkshire on Friday.

The warning runs from midnight tonight until midday tomorrow.

A spokesperson said wintry showers were expected to continue to feed inland from the North Sea through the night before tending to ease away on Friday morning.

At low levels the showers will mainly fall as rain, sleet or small hail, while above 250m (820ft) some will fall as snow with further small accumulations of snow possible.

As temperatures will be widely below freezing showers at lower levels will lead to icy patches developing in many locations.

Harrogate Town manager Simon Weaver says the snow has not had too much of an impact on the team.

"It's part of being involved in football, you go through the seasons," he says.

"In August, it was absolutely boiling and here we are in November and it's bitterly cold but run around and you'll soon get warm!"

  18. Council 'well prepared' for snow responsepublished at 14:05 GMT 20 November 2025

North Yorkshire Council's corporate director of environment, Karl Battersby, says that the council was "well prepared" to respond to snow in the county.

"The weather has given us what we predicted really in terms of snowfall and the areas that have been affected," he says.

"There's certainly no routes that we've missed, we're carrying out our winter programme as we would normally do."

  20. Scarborough Athletic keen to play onpublished at 13:21 GMT 20 November 2025

Scarborough Athletic hope Saturday's match against Hereford FC will go ahead despite snowy conditions on the pitch.

The Seadogs are playing their home matches this season at the Mounting Systems Stadium in Bridlington, which is currently under four inches of snow.

Manager Jonathan Greening says: "I think we might need some volunteers to go down and shovel the snow off tomorrow.

"Once you get the snow off to the side of the pitch, it is usually fine.

"We both want the game on, so we might need an army of fans to get down to Brid to get the game on."
