Here's a recap of what we know about what happened in Derby last night.

Derbyshire Police said seven people were injured when a black Suzuki Swift car was driven into pedestrians in Friar Gate at about 21:30 GMT.

Seven people suffered non life-threatening injuries and officers confirmed no-one died in the incident.

The seven injured were treated at the scene by ambulance crews and taken to the Royal Derby Hospital and Nottingham's Queen’s Medical Centre.

A man in his 30s, who is originally from India, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving. He remains in police custody.

Police said there was "no ongoing risk to the public".

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing and police are keeping an "open mind as to the motives".

Derbyshire Police said cars that are parked in Friar Gate will not be able to be moved until the cordon has been lifted and the road has been reopened.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused, please keep an eye on our Facebook page for further updates," said the force.

Catherine Atkinson, Labour MP for Derby North, told BBC Radio Derby she was shocked by the incident.

"You see these incidents around the world but you never expect them to happen in your city, your home," she said.

"I can't imagine what people who have been hurt or witnessed the incident are going through.

"There will be many people throughout the night and today who will be desperately checking with loved ones to see if they are ok."

Atkinson said she would be raising the subject of cars being driven at people in Parliament.

"I am concerned and I will be raising this with government," she said.

"We need to see if guidelines will be reviewed because we are seeing an increased amount of incidents where cars are being used as weapons."

He said things were currently very quiet and there was a fair amount of debris on the road.

Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council, has said in a statement. "I am horrified by the incident in our city centre on Saturday evening, where several pedestrians were injured after being struck by a vehicle.

"My thoughts, and those of the entire city, are with those injured, their families, and everyone who witnessed this distressing event

"I want to thank the emergency services for their rapid response and professional care under such difficult circumstances.

"Our frontline responders do an incredible job, and the safety of our residents remains our absolute priority

"We are working closely with Derbyshire Police as they investigate the circumstances of this incident. I urge anyone with information to contact the Police immediately to assist with their investigation.

"Please continue to avoid the affected area to allow officers to carry out their vital work”.

In their first statement on Saturday evening, Derbyshire Police said: "Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public.

"No further information is available at this stage but we will post an update as soon as we have one."

We can confirm that seven people were injured when a car was driven into pedestrians in a city centre street.

The car, a black Suzuki Swift, struck a number of people in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March.

Seven people were treated at the scene by ambulance crews and taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

The seven suffered a range of serious but not life-threatening injuries and we can confirm that contrary to online speculation, no one died in the incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.
