It comes as another landslide on a house in nearby Welcome Bay has killed two people.

- Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says that New Zealand is "heavy with grief" after the "profound tragedy" and is set to visit disaster-hit sites on Friday
- One camper recalls jumping out of the pool when he saw the landslide coming down, while others described how, while the landslide looked like it was moving slowly, it came down in "seconds"
- Emergency management minister Mark Mitchell says officials had a "rough idea" of the number of missing people at the campsite, but would wait for an exact figure before announcing anything, adding that it was "too sensitive" to talk about the nationalities of those unaccounted for
- Witnesses "heard some voices" from the rubble, but no-one has been rescued so far
- The national fire authority say they have not heard any signs of life under the landslide, though search operations are set to continue through the night
- Much of the North Island is still in a fragile state of rebuilding after Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023
- In recent days heavy rain has wreaked havoc in much of the North Island
