Europe hit by blanket of snow and sub-zero conditions

Heavy snowfall has caused disruption across northern Europe, closing airports and bringing traffic to a standstill.

Geneva airport in Switzerland was closed after the city saw 10 inches of snow in 24 hours. In Poland, eight homeless people died as temperatures fell below -20C.

In Lyon, in south east France, heavy snowfalls clogged highways and rendered conditions treacherous for motorists.
