EU commissioner's call to lift sanctions against Burma

The EU commissioner for development has said he favours lifting sanctions against Burma.

Speaking on a visit to the country, Andris Piebalgs said the way that forthcoming by-elections are conducted will help determine whether further restrictions can be eased.

He told the BBC's Rachel Harvey reforms are never easy, but it was important to show they are ''paying off''.
