Government plans to scrap default retirement age

The government has confirmed that the official retirement age of 65 will be scrapped this year as planned, even though employers had asked for a delay.

Ministers say giving people the freedom to work longer will benefit the UK's economy.

The draft legislation to raise the state pension age to 66 in the year 2020 is also being published today.
