NHS IT contracts 'to be amended' - Andrew Lansley

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has said the government cannot abandon the contracts already agreed on the NHS IT programme, but that they are being amended.

A Public Accounts Committee report says mounting problems with the electronic records system were making the £7bn project "unworkable".

Mr Lansley said the government was working to "reduce the costs of the programme" and had "taken £1.3bn out of the cost already".

He also said they were working on changing the proposed system "from a programme that is top-down and centralised to one that genuinely is led" by its users.
