Pension Scheme Member Trustee vacancy – applications invited

The BBC Pension Scheme (the Scheme) is looking for a Scheme member to join its Trustee Board.

Would you like to be a Trustee of the Pension Scheme?

An opportunity has arisen to play an important role in the future of the Pension Scheme. The Trustee Board includes several directors who are elected from the Scheme membership, and a vacancy for a Pensioner Trustee Director will arise on 1 January 2026. All eligible members can apply for this role, regardless of background or their former role at the BBC.

What does a Trustee do?

As a member of the Trustee Board you would contribute to ensuring that the Scheme meets its key objective of paying benefits at the right time to the right people. You would take part in decisions on strategy, and help make sure that the Scheme is governed in accordance with its Rules and changing legislation. You would help to decide investment policy to help sustain the Scheme financially, and monitor performance.

Who can be a Trustee director?

The Trustee Board welcomes applications from UK-resident pensioner members of the Scheme, and is committed to diversity and inclusion. A diverse mix of people from different backgrounds can bring a variety of skills, perspectives, personal qualities and experiences to the Board, helping the Scheme to operate effectively for all its members and beneficiaries.

You don’t need to be a pensions expert or have a background in finance or investment, or specialist knowledge. The Board is looking for enthusiastic people who have a basic understanding of pensions, are willing to learn more, and most importantly dedicated to helping ensure the success of the Scheme.

Being a Trustee Director is demanding, but the work is varied, stimulating and fulfilling. It’s an opportunity to develop knowledge and exercise skills, and work with a wide range of people. The Pensioner Trustee plays an important role in the governance of the Scheme for the benefit of current and former BBC staff.

How can I find out more?

To find out more about what the role involves, view the detailed role description. We are holding an information session for those who want to learn more. All eligible members are welcome to attend, and attending the information session does not oblige you to apply for the role.

The information session is on 3 July 1000-1130, and 23 July 1400-1530. They will be at London Broadcasting House, with the facility to join virtually. To book a place or to find out more about the role, please contact the Scheme Secretary Rachel Hallett ([email protected]) by Tuesday 1 July.

The term of office runs to 31 December 2031. The role would require a commitment of around 25 days per year. A fee of £10,100 is payable.

How do I apply?

To be eligible to apply, you must be a UK-resident Pensioner member of the Scheme, i.e. a former contributing member (those receiving a spouse, partner or dependant pension are not eligible), and you must attend an information session.

If there are two or more applications, an election will be held with all pensioner members eligible to vote. The result will be published on the Scheme website.
