Jessie J has been announced as the winner of Sound of 2011.
Essex born Jessica Cornish burst onto the scene in November 2010 in a flurry of excitement surrounding tracks Do It Like A Dude and Price Tag. The 22 year old singer wrote poetry as a child and began her career on the stage with a role in the West End production of Whistle Down The Wind. A trip to study musical theatre at the celebrated Brit School led to her first record deal with Gut Records and early interest from R 'n' B circles in the United States.
Jessie suffered health problems throughout her early career and a minor stroke temporarily halted her career at the age of 18. Undeterred, the singer returned with renewed focus, finding success as a songwriter for Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake, who has hailed Cornish as "the best singer in the world right now".
A further writing credit on the Miley Cyrus hit "Party In The USA" followed before current label Island encouraged the singer to keep Do It Like A Dude to herself, instead of offering it to Rihanna, as she had first planned. Performances on 1Xtra's MistaJam show and Later... with Jools Holland soon brought the artist to a wider public consciousness, leading to a host of sold out London shows and a buzz of media anticipation around debut album Who You Are, all of which makes Jessie J a prime candidate for 2011's Sound Of shortlist.
