Kathryn Williams’ last album, 'Over Fly Over', was a disappointment. This time round, thanks to an approach that’s sparse even for her and some moments of sheer beauty, there’s no repeat performance.
The joy of Williams’ songs is in the details. Pretty as her tunes are, it’s the honest observations of love, sex and the absurdities of life that make them special.
'Leave To Remain' is full of her lyrical gems. Take the opening line to "Sustain Pedal" - "your breath from a kiss went down my throat", she intones in that silky sweet voice of hers, and you instantly know exactly what she means.
That said, without the swelling gorgeousness of "Hollow" or the gently picked guitar and angelic harmonies of "Blue Onto You", all those words would be for nothing. As it is, she’s produced arguably her best work to date. Normal service has been resumed.
