Over the years Rowetta has sung backing vocals for Simply Red, Groove Armada, PJ Proby and Happy Mondays. Then in 2004 she came third in ITV's The X Factor, which gave her the chance tomakean album in her own right.
It's a mixed old ragbag of material, with standards like "Eleanor Rigby", "Over the Rainbow" and "The Look of Love" jostling for space amongst the stomping disco fare you'd expect from 'hi-nrg' producer Ian Levine. There are covers of Oasis, Stevie Wonder and Sammy Davis Jr.
The three originals are equally diverse, and it's hard to see who this album is supposed to appeal to. That said, many of the tracks are perfectly agreeable in a middle-of-the-road kind of way, and Rowetta's enthusiasm is undeniable, if a little reminiscent of a karaoke Shirley Bassey. The stand-outtrackis self-penned debut single "Fly".
