Legendary Jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd has had a remarkable and varied career.
Born in Detroit in 1932, he achieved a bachelor's degree in music before later going on to teach music himself at New York University.
As a recording artist, his first album Off to the Races was released in 1958 on the legendary Blue Note label.
Fast forward to 1975 and Byrd releases Places and Spaces. Just one of his many masterpieces it provided a rich source of samples for the hip hop generation.
It's an out-and-out jazz funk classic which perfectly showcases Byrd's incredible musicianship.
