An astounding contribution to world music.

As far as compilation albums go, Panama! 2 is an astounding contribution to world music. Compiled by Miles Cleret, this collection should capture the attention of listeners outside the traditional world music and Hispanophone audience. Showcasing the years 1967-77, it is an amazing snapshot of the vibrant crucible of cultures that form Panama.
Geographically the bridge between North and South America, bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific, the rich cultural mix of this small country has given birth to some of South America’s greatest music. Panama! 2 is clearly a painstakingly thought-out collection and it’s unique in highlighting talent that until now was unheard of outside Panama.
Panamanian music has actually enjoyed a renaissance of late, in film, music and advertising, yet with a degree of anonymity. Early reggaeton numbers featured on this compilation such as Tamborito Swing and Love Letters have a style now adapted by many contemporary artists. The result is that Panama! 2 has a comfortable familiarity, yet presents such rare treats as the fantastically infectious La Escoba.
This diverse selection highlights the multiple influences at play in the Panamanian music scene of the late 60s, from Trinidadian calypso to North American funk, with an intriguing rawness induced by the heady combinations of styles. Panama! 2 has successfully captured and charted the irreplaceable character of a time and place musically, making this an excellent compilation by any standards.
