The Compass: Being
Ep. 1/4 -

At a pivotal point in gender relations, Tim Samuels and Anna Holligan head to Mexico and Poland to hear what's on the minds of women and men. They speak to a wide range of people, building a nuanced and stereotype-defying mosaic of the gender experience. An experience that sits in the context of gender violence, rapidly-shifting economies, lurches towards political authoritarianism, and the question of whether #MeToo really rippled out beyond parts of the West.
Programme one: Mexico City - Women
Mexico has always felt like a country where men live on their own terms. A place where women strive for equality - and safety. More than nine are murdered in the country every day, according to U.N. Women.
In the first programme in the series, Tim Samuels and Anna Holligan travel to Mexico City. We hear from a sports commentator, a domestic worker, journalists, newspaper editors and aspiring actresses. Mexican women are marching, calling on authorities to do more to combat the high rates of femicide - the murder of a woman because of her gender.
Accusations of discrimination and harassment, most of them anonymous and in creative industries, have spread online. But what impact will the #MeToo movement have?
